For gaming I'd suggest a Q6600 GO stepping. Trust the guys here at OCN. They helped me allot in buying the right stuff. If you can't afford a Q6600. Then go for a E6420.

For gaming you suggest a Q6600? Not necessary.

It mean his P4 is overclocked to 4.11Ghz the performance is the equivalent of a 7.4Ghz "reference CPU" which one I don't know.

My 3.4Ghz Core 2 is rated at 7.6 Ghz "reference" so it's a bit faster than that 4.11Ghz P4.

The reference is there to compare different architecture of CPU together because a Pentium 4 at 2.66Ghz is slower than a Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz. How accurate is it i don't know. What are your SuperPi mod scores da9pwnsu?

I think he means, the Q6600 is so cheap and future proof. It'll be perfect for a upgrade. As we can all agree it's performance is top notch and it overclocks very well.

Yeah in that price range if you overclock it and have good cooling it's a great deal. A few hundred Mhz slower overclocks than dual cores maybe but Quad core benefits are good. And will really help in the next generation of games and already help a lot in certain tasks like 3D rendering/modeling or encoding.

Lets not be idiots here. The problem obviously isn't his P4. Its his graphics chipset, and maybe his RAM.

7900GS is the budget way to go.
