how do you dispose of old power supplies?

i have a few old non working power supplies sitting around, and i have no idea how to get rid of them. your supposed to recycle them aren't you? i have no idea where to do this and i don't want to throw them out if they arer supposed to be recycled. what do companies do with computers that aren't worth fixing? do they pay somebody to recycle the computers?

I work at an apartment complex, where people throw out monitors, microwaves, batteries that type of thing and we have to pay someone to take them.

I work for the Department of Environmental Health, your local county/city should have a program to dispose of e-waste/universal waste. Just call your local garbage disposal for your city/town and inquire about dropping them off. Most cities don't charge anything, but for something as small as a PSU, if anything they would charge 5$. Same with computers, they shouldn't have a fee if they have a center.

County of San Diego has pick/drop-off centers !

thanks, i guess my next move is to call the garbage company then. i know the computer stores around here charge you something to dispose of old PCs so i wasn't sure and i guess i won't really know until i ask them.

PCs and PSU do contain toxic substances.... If you look on your motherboard, you should see a "Do not dispose" logo.

Illegal but honestly you won't get caught unless your neighboor is a jerk face.

Yeah, places like CompUsa/best buy have "e-waste" days where you can drop off old CRTs/Computers/Keyboard ETC for free, but some don't participate in them. You could always donate your computer to schools for their comp repair programs, thats how I learned in highschool, repairing dot matix printers and installing windows 98 on 4gb HDD ! If for some reason your local disposal charges to much, just call a random comp repair place and ask if they have small business exemption to dispose of waste free, so you can drop off the PC's for disposals.
