Yes, the grounds are the side contacts... but I prefer to hardwire it (less bulky chunky plastic in the case haha)
But he needs the plug for the phone... and if there is any sort of electronics inside the charger (ie to tweak amperage etc) then he'll need that too.

There's a fuse to prevent overamperage and drain of the cars battery, in things such as a car accident or your batterys voltage drops too low.

yeah when I hardwire that stuff I always include the fuse in a fuse block, only a dollar or so.

i have a USB cable for my phone. it can charge while i transfer MP3s and pictures to and from my computer. very convenient.

As I do not feel like reading this entire post im sorry if I post what some1 already has..... Do the same mod that you do to the PSOne LCD power cable (google it its everywhere). You buy the car charger (which is 12V) and open it and use a molex thingermabob (also 12v) and connect red and black wires. There ya go
