abit KN8 SLI + Opty 146 OC help

Thread Starter
Hi everyone, I have a friend who would like to OC his opty 146 to whatever we can get it to on air. He has an aftermarket cooler made by artic, not sure exactly which one. I've never personally actually overclocked a system my self but I've read a lot about it and read these forums a lot. Here are some screenshots I took to help out. I'm not sure of the exact stepping he has and not sure how to find out exactly.

Help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

The stepping is printed on the actual cpu heatspreader. Those Opty's tend to clock pretty well, but it;s hard to say cuz we don't know anything about his system (no sytem specs).

EDIT

BTW I have the same mobo, paired with what you see in my specs. I can get the X2 stable at 2.7GHZ. up from 2.0 GHZ.

I'm assuming you've read one of the overclocking guides on this site and know the basics. Everything looks good on your friends system except the PSU, That Antec Smart Power is a high quality unit but at 400w may not be strong enough to get you real far. Also on the ram is it 4 x 512 or 2 x 1024?
Anyways I'd start with slowly bumping up the HTT/FSB at stock volts and see what you get. Test for stability with Ortho's or OCCT. You can download free versions from the download section of this site.

Some things to know, unless you already do
1. Keep the full load CPU temp to 50c.
2. Increase the vcore only as necessary, most Opty 939s aren't very voltage hungry and usually OC well in the mid to high 1.4v range.
3. By setting the RAM to DDR333 (166MHz), it will only increase approximately 83% of every 1 MHz you OC the CPU. That will help to keep the RAM at lower stable speeds. Dependant on the RAM, you may also bump up the vdimm to attain higher stable speeds. Also, 3-4-4-8 should afford a little more speed if necessary. You may even have to drop as low as DDR266 (133MHz) but doubtful.
4. The LDT (LDT is used by Abit and DFI)or HT of the RAM, it always bases @ the CPU speed regardless of the RAMs base speed setting. Default is 200x5, so if the CPU is increased to 250 the LDT (HT) multiplier must be reduced. Keep the over all speed of the LDT below 1080 to maintain stability...
Basically 4x up to about 260 and 3x beyond that.
5. The LDT (or memory controller) and chipo set voltage may also need to be increased, but usually only with higher extreme OCing so increase as necessary.

That system will likely OC easily @ 10x250MHz with a 4x LDT (HT) with 1.45v to the CPU using a DDR333 RAM setting with a vdimm of 2.8v.
Move up slowly from there.

Thanks guys for your replies so far! I had to re-read overclocking guide last night for the details. I couldnt find the one on here so I just read this one at
http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Ha...uides/OCguide/ which seemed pretty good. That info with what you guys have said, I Think my friend and I are ready to do this. I will keep you guys updated

Im having him try these settings based on what you guys have said and also based on someone on an other forum who had the same exact mobo + cpu

Adjust CPU FSB Freg = 240
HT Freq = 4
CPU Spread Spectrum = Disable
SATA Spread Spectrum = Disable
PCIE Spread Spectrum = Disable
PCIE Clock = 100Mhz (Never allow AUTO. Set at 100 when OC'ing)
Cool n Quiet = Disable
Adjust CPU ratio = 10
Adjust CPU VID = 1.35
Extra CPU Voltage = 3.3% (this and CPU VID will give 1.395v)
Memory Voltage = 2.6 (or 2.65, but set this manually)

This is just to get us started to see if it will do that.]

edit: well apparently my friend cant find these settings in his bios which I thought would be right since it was from a forum with the same board but I guess not. If only I could find a screenshot/photo of the cpu portion of his bios. I am not physically able to see his system, we are only doing this online. Anyways, he is going to write down the options he has and report back to me

so far were up to 2400mhz . with these settings.

set FSB to 240, set pcie clock to 100mhz, set ram voltage at 2.6, and set hypertransport to .4%

No problems so far and temps are about 40C so far.

sorry that was an old picture at FSB 230 but its now set at 240FSB.

edit: he has hit 55C mark with prime95 in blend mode after about 5 minutes but speedfan was set to 40% fan usage so I told him to set it to 100% well see what that that does.
