$350 Budget Build for Mom

Thread Starter
So I thought I might bring my mom into the 21st century with the cheapest dual core build I could make that still had reliable parts (a 60 year old woman can't trouble shoot, this thing needs to work every time lol). This build assumes she is going to reuse the CRT monitor, keyboard, mouse and printer she already has, and one of my XP SP2 CDs. I left out a video card because this system won't be used for games ever. It's purely to use the internet and maybe office products (if I get around to teaching her).

Mobo: ECS GeForce6100 Micro ATX $50
CPU: X2 3600+ Brisbane $62 - $10 combo = $52
Memory: A Data 2x1GB PC2 6400 $87 - $10 MIR = $77
HDD: Seagate 250 GB $63
Power Supply: Cooler Master 430W $35
Case: Rosewill R6425 $16
Extra fan for front intake: Apevia 120mm 64 CFM No LED $5
CD/DVD Drive: Samsung 18X $30
Shipping: $21
TOTAL: $349

Let me know what you guys think. Her current system is a 900 MHz Athlon, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD, Win ME, all bundled up by HP. She complains that it's slow, and I sympathize lol. I've never worked with a micro board before, but it seemed like the best board for the price.

You can always think about using that..

Brand new.

Solid build otherwise..

The mobo is a little iffy but meh.

Don't cheap out on PSU. Minus rep for suggesting such a thing startekee.

Except for video card, that rig is better than mine. :/

How about I give you mine and you give me that one.

I would think 1 gig RAM would be more than enough, and does she really need a 250 gig HD? And seriously, don't take startekee's advice on cheaping out on the PSU. But I think the X2 is fine, it's cheap enough.

Seems quite a bit of memory for just internet/office use... I only have 1GB RAM and I can run games smoothly...

Yep.. same thing on dual core. I run with single core and can play games smoothly (although I would like to have dual core).

Also that is a pretty big HD... might want to trim that down a bit if she won't be downloading many programs.
