how to: 5v your fans, with pictures!

ok i know there was this thread but the way i did it is different. i dont exactly know the science behind his way but i do know that i have tried my way on many fans and have not encoundered a single problem and do not expect to.

ok um how do i say this, "I am not responsible for anything you break". good enough?

Before we get to it, let's understand how it works first.

FEMALE 4pin molex:

MALE 4pin molex:

Voltage from PSU:

YELLOW=12V; RED=5v; BLACK=ground/negative

so basically we want to get that red fan wire to connect to the 5v on the other side

WHAT TO DO:

essentially this is what you're gonna do:

the above is the power supply Female molex but if you dont want to mess with the psu/warranty, you can switch it on the fan's male molex but this can be a bit harder. you can also get a male & female molex connectors and some 22+ gage wire to make an adapter. if this is over your head, dont worry, i'm gonna go over everything

What You Need
-sewing needles or paper clips
-heh, that's it!

let's look at an x-ray

what you're seeing is one of the female pins removed from the female molex connector off the PSU. in the middle of the connector there is a blocker that goes in between the two little fins and the small humps.

thats why the four pins dont just slip out when you plug them in

to take them out, all you have to do is bend the two flaps inward like so:

the flaps aren't springs so when you bend them, they stay in that position until you bend them again.

when both flaps are bend inward, it should be fairly easy to slip the pin back:

when you pull them back, just dont forget where they went.
once they are all removed, you can flip the connector around (see above animation).

to put them back in, all you need to do is insert the paper clip/sewing needle inside the pin (from the front) and bend both flaps outward again. when you push the pin back inside the connector, you might hear a click. nevertheless you should push it in as far as it goes.

doing it with 4 pin MALE molex requires a sewing needle because paper clips are too thick. when you insert the pins back into the connector, you cant bend the flaps back though the opening because there is no opening:

the only way to do this is to take that sewing needle, place in behind the flap as much as possible, and just try your best to pull it back outwards.

Making an Adapter:
coming soon. well, eventually.

when you plug in your fan and power up, the difference should be noticable. all i heard from the fan was the air moving. but like they always say, you get less airflow, blah blah. and if you have an led fan, the led's will be half as bright.

if you dont like your led's dull off the 5v wire, you can just do what i do and buy non-led fans and drill 3mm holes in each corner and buy 5mm LEDs and resistors. but that's a different tutorial.
