Get 8800GTS 640MB, step-up to GTX? - Page 2

I agree witht he 8600 pruchase. My step-up ends at the end of august and I don't think i'm going to use it, i was almost going to do the GTX right away but then starting thinking about the 9 series. The GTX is still struggling with some of the patched dx10 stuff and generation after generation the pattern shows that the next generation is about 100% better than the previous, I remember my 7600GT could beat the 6800 ultra. So get something to hold you off till novermber and get the 9 series or you might regret buying something like the GTX. One think you could do is wait till till sep, get the GTS and step it up in november

I'm been saying this alot around the forums, but people still keep spreading the rumors.

The G92 chip is not the 9 series. It is the 8900GTX and the 8950GX2. They come out around november. The 9 series will not be out until mid/late 08.

Those spec sheets are also wrong.

I have a insider source so please don't ask me about my source. If you don't want to believe me than don't, just trying to help people that are "waiting for the 9 series".

I personally would get the 8800GTX now, and then step up to the 8900GTX in november.

November is a estimate and it might be delayed a month or two, you never know.

Nope,

However when I rmaed my 8800GTXs (after the 90 days step up expired) the 90 days started over again... I'm not sure if I actually went through the process they would actually allow me to step up though. I'm sure its in their systems that the cards were purchased for the first time a long time ago.

I get 50fps avg on the FEAR benchmark with this card OC'ed. It is little faster than my x1950pro, and a LOT faster than the 7900GT I had.

Reviews are generally useless IMO. For instance Tom's hardware charts shows the 8600GT getting 9fps in oblivion outdoors when I average 25fps with more intensive settings than they used. Many of the reviews show no framerate difference between the 8800GTS 320mb & 640mb cards, yet I've owned both and did notice a difference in Oblivion with texture mods.

I've actually owned many of the cards I talk about, and not many can say that here. I do bring that point up a lot, but after the discrepancies I've seen between my personal results vs. what I've seen on the internet, I never can trust the opinions of other computer enthusiasts and review sites 100% anymore. Some sites I trust more than others but I've been burned more than once by making purchases relying on benchmarks and opinions. Same goes for forum members. Hours & hours of first hand experience with each card speaks much more loudly to me than many of the wildly inaccurate benches and uninformed bandwagon-bashfests... there is useful information to be had but it requires extensive sifting.

I really don't feel there is a need to "Back up what I'm saying", either a person takes advice or leaves it. This is similar to the RAID 0 debate... benchmarks can show a single load time, but they can't represent the overall apparent responsiveness of a system, or explain the numerous users that have had positive results. Similarly most articles show avg fps, but rarely include min fps, which is a MUCH more important number IMO. Additionally, there is no measurement for stutter, which I've seen certain cards and drivers have more problem with than others.

I don't mind devoting time and my personal experiences to helping people make educated, open minded, and financially prudent decisions- I'm not coming here to the forum to make up fairy tales, waste my free time, or try to convince people to buy a card just so they can have the same card as me.

I'm just waiting for the next refresh, I don't really care what it is called.
