Oh I WANT to pinmod, I just don't wanna run out of screwdrivers doing it...

EDIT: Alright, getting offline. Gotta go install Windows on the beast. I'll update this with any info I might collect if it's worthy.

I just ran into a very strange issue.

Upon boot, I noticed the BIOS reported the CPU as an Athlon XP 1800+. The builder underclocked the chip...

Also, the hard drive seems to vanish randomly upon the first few attempts at booting, but once it's running, there's no problems. Rebooting after the drive has been detected properly also shows no problems.

Shutting the computer down for about 10 minutes, then starting it up starts this cycle of phantom hard drive all over again.

Temps look decent. Max temp with Orthos was 47C after a 10 minute run.

Now I need to look for a Windows AMIBIOS flasher that works with this board. I lack the floppy necessary for the safer route.

have you run CPU-z on it?

make sure the IDE master/slave jumpers are set correctly

Yes, and it reported it as an Athlon XP 1800+, but the model number on the chip says otherwise (AXDA2400). Setting the CPU and FSB speed to 133MHz fixed this issue. It was set at 100/100.

They are. Both optical drives and the HD are doing the same thing. Seems like booting when the PC is still warm doesn't have any issues.

Booting after the PC has been off for a while shows no drives at all. I enter CMOS, have it try to detect drives, and get nothing. Wait for a few minutes, have it check again, and everything is fine until the computer is shut off for over 10 minutes. Powering off for 1 minute and powering back on doesn't recreate this problem. CMOS settings aren't getting reset during the 10 minute time. I've checked the 3V battery with a multimeter, and it's showing 2.7V

This problem also happened when the CPU/FSB was at 100/100.

First, I'd have to solve the issues with it. He is talking about doing some minor cheap upgrades to it by buying used parts.
