2 medium cards or 1 monster?

Ok my pc now has a 3000+ in it, so its been a while... still have agp. when I built the thing pci express wasnt even in the news yet, so sli/crossfires were out too. recently i tried playing supcom with my radeon 9800, but that was a "no go." So I went out and purchased a 1950 pro agp. not bad. but then thats about the point where my knowledge of modern day stuff ends.

Of course i've been looking at all the benchmarks and its pretty easy to see how well the $500 cards do over the $150 cards, but what about two of 'em? I just set my friend up w/ a 8600 GT and we got him an extra 1000 points on 3d06 with a little push in the frequency department. Its a good card, and plays the beta to world in conflict pretty well. but i would like to play w/ the dual monitor support, w/ the mini map up in full screeen.

so what would be better, a monster $500 card or two medium range cards at the same or lower price? maybe even a 8600 GT and something smaller for the second card? I mean if one card plays the game well, do i really need a second at that price just to push a strategic map?

If you're talking about doing SLI or xfire, the single good card will perform better. Example: Say a 7600GT is half as powerful as a 7950GT. One 7950GT will be better than 2 x SLI 7600GTs. SLI and xfire are not 100% efficient; they do not "double" performance.

wow, posted at two other sites, including amd, waited all day no response. 20 seconds here and 6 uniques. nice.

ok so 1 $500 8800 is better than two $250 8600gts? I believe you, but are there some benchmarks for this kinda thing? I cant figure out why no one seems to do this, or at least why they havn't posted any results.

*edit
and from what i can tell the $250 isnt really "half" the card as the $500, only half the price... u c? i just did a pricegrab on the 8800, lowest is $520. lowest gts is $157. from most benchmarks i've seen a standard build 8800 is roughly 2x as good as a standard 8600, but that price doesnt add up. now if i get the oc gts run it up several hundred points in the mark thats still less than half the price and over half the reults.

A $500 8800 would be better because it would allow multi monitor set up , and should you wish to upgrade in the future, it allows you room to do so. Your power consumption and heat generation by the gfx card would probably be less then that of the two cards individually. It also leaves you to use pci slots which may be blocked due to two cards.

yeah, im thinking the 8800 gts. from what i can see its well over half the performance and about half the cost at $270.

typical results most ppl have seen:

@lanky: does sli/crossfire not allow for multiple monitors?

yeah, i was referring to more of a 2 8800 gts vs a 1 gtx setup w/ that price i suppose. which still seems like it would kick the gtx's tail.

so maybe:

2 8600 gts !> 1 8800 gts but....
2 8800 gts > 1 8800 gtx ??
