Eventually near the future the will be probably 20 Cores lol imagine how strong that would be.

With a AM2+ MB you have the option to upgrade but don't have to if your happy with X2

As an owner of single and dual core cpus I totally disagree with you.
I've owned single core systems before.

The benefit of dual core has been for multitasking, but I don't know anyone who needs more than two cores for multitasking atm.

Sounds like a waste of money and time to me. They should make processors more powerful, so there's a huge improvement in resource-intensive applications rather than just being able to run even more apps slowly at the same time.

What would be better in a game, going from a 2GHz dual core to a 3GHz dualcore or to a 2GHz quadcore? It'll be the 3GHz dualcore, even though the 2GHz quadcore theoretically should be better.

I mean, obviously quadcores have the potential to give huge gains like that over a dual core. But software engineers are complete idiots, they'll figure out how to properly implement multithreading sometime in 2050.

Their doing games for dual core already. With quads on the market I'm sure it won't be that long for them to take advantage of them too.A year or 2 I hope.

Well I was able to do back to back tests with games at equal speeds on both cores. I found yes the speed was essentially the same but the games ran much smoother on the dual core and loading and such was much improved. Also some newer games are becoming cpu dependent where as its not about graphic power but the cpu being able to run multiple threads (you know AI in games) much better. Now to me since nothing has been optimized for multi cores yet then I can imagine the future growth of multi cores. I just read something stating that by the end of next year AMD plans on going to 8 cores per cpu. We havent seen any true performance of quad core because
Intels method of quad core is essentially messy and a brute force approach.

Your statement holds some water in XP. However, in Vista, apps don't need to be multithreaded. Vista's excellent processor scheduling distributes a single-threaded app among all available cores:

The "singlethread" argument is old, and does not necessarily apply anymore.
