Help me choose.

Hi there =)

I'm trying to choose between two harddrives that's going in my upcoming build, here they are:

http://www.canadacomputers.com/index...1226&cid=HD.96
http://www.canadacomputers.com/index...0282&cid=HD.96

I've never owned a raptor before, I know it's only 36GB but it'll be my boot drive and I'll keep the one I have now as backup/data.

Raptors are a lot of money for not a lot of gain. Unless you are aiming for a really high end system i suggest you get a nice seagate barracuda 7200.10 and use that. It's cheaper and gives you plenty of storage and performs excellently.
Money can be spent with more effect on other components.

The Raptors burst speeds are unparalleled but their price/performance ratio is horrendous (which I'm sure you've noticed).

Personally, I think the Raptors are a waste of money. The difference is not worth it IMO when you can just get two cheaper (but quality) drives and RAID them for less.

I wanted 320GB of storage space, so I bought two 160GB Western Digital drives (7,200RPM Sata II) and setup a RAID 0 array. Seagate's are really nice drives as well (kinda wish I had gotten those).

I'd buy two identical Seagate Barracuda's equaling your desired storage space, and setup a RAID 0 array with them if I were you.

I don't know why anyone would want to buy a raptor unless they have too much money, and in that case they should mail some to me before they buy a raptor.

So when you say high end would you mean better performance? the price isn't really a problem and I do have a 120GB I intend to use. (If I get the raptor that is).

I'm just wondering if the fact that it's a 10,000 rpm makes it any better.

Well, If you have the money go for a much larger raptor.

Edit: How bout a raptor w/ a window? I think it's the biggest raptor they have, not sure. 150gb.

Edit2: Cheaper on newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136012

Ok what i mean by that is.

If you already have nearly everything top of the line (SLI 8800s, quad core CPU, good aftermarket cooling, enough storage, and a nice overclocking motherboard) THEN and only then do you get raptors. As a raptor would be the only thing that would really boost your performance.

So IMO unless your spending over 3 grand on your PC, stay away from raptors.

It is just much better to use that money one other components rather than on a frivolous raptor.
