need help with Zalman 9700 LED

Thread Starter
Okay I have a Lian-Li pc-60b plus case which has very unusual air flow, but supposedly effective. I also have a Zalman 9700 LED cpu cooler sitting on my e6600 and normally you are supposed to face the zalman towards the back of the case so the hot air will flow out the back but my problem is the 80mm in the back of the case is an intake fan, so my question is which way should i face the fan in this particular case. I've done a little bit of testing myself, but can't come to any conclusions. I also have a 8800gtx which takes alot of room. I will post pictures tomorrow to help you get the "picture". lol.

Personally, I would just turn the 80mm in the back around, so that one functions as an outtake. The Zalman highly depends on good airflow, preferably a front-to-back flow.

wouldn't doing that mess up the airflow of the entire case?
I have that same cooler, which is blowing*out* the back. It's simple..as an example of mine. Air brought in from the front, air goes out through the back.

If you have the Zalman and your rear fan blowing against one another, that will cause you problems.

Basically you need to provide a route for the air blown by the zalman to excape. In my lian li, my zalman basically lines up with the main exhaust fan. Seems in your "case" (lol), that there is fan on the side of the case positioned over the cpu. If this is the "case" and there is not an exhaust fan that the zalman can blow twords, than you may be better off with a hsf that blows straight up...like most stock ones.

I will look out for pictures.

Point your Zalman to blow whichever way your case flow is. If it's back to front face the fan to the back so it blows with the rest of your system, or just switch all the fans around so it blows front to back.

oops, I was wrong, seems that fan on the side is intended for graphics cards, and you do have a rear fan perpendicular to the cpu. Turn that fan around. My Lian Li came with one fan installed blowing the wrong way as well, I had to flip it myself.

QFT, if the zalman goes against the flow, the hot air has no where to go. The hot air stays in one place doing nothing but getting hotter.

i dont think you guys get the point of how the airflow works in this case. the fans on both the front and back blow in the case, and the hot air blows out the side and the top. therefore i believe that reversing the rear fan of the case will disrupt the entire airflow. i also checked the lian li website, and my fan was not incorrectly positioned either. air comes in from the front and back, and exhausts through the side and top.. and the zalman points where?

EDIT: i do realize that the zalman needs to be pointed in the direction of airflow in my case, but like i tried to explain, the airflow of my case is rather unusual. but, i did notice that i could point it directly towards my psu, which has a exhaust fan......hmmmm...

i've seen your case and understand what you're saying. the rear fan is designed to be an intake. if i were you, i'd try the Zalman pointing up and pointing forward and see if either of those methods works for you. pointing up would be nice if you don't get turbulence noise from the two fans pointing different directions. if you point the Zalman toward the front of your case, you have to hope your blowhole fan will exhaust all your heat. but it's true that your case was designed for a more typical HSF that blows toward the motherboard.
