World of Warcraft and Second Life are proving a boon to social scientists who are using them as virtual laboratories.

Interesting idea. It would probably be better if the scientists created free online RPG games for people to use and part of the EULA for them was that the players would be studied. That way the scientists could control the environments more easily and people would get more free games to play. Of course, one of the limitations of this kind of thing is that it only tells you about the kind of people who play these kind of games, rather than "people" per se, but it's probably close enough to draw some meaningful conclusions.

Highly-Annoyed

I've actually seen several books on the sociology and psychology behind technology and gaming. It's fascinating. People have been studying this stuff for quite awhile. It sort of started with Dungeons and Dragons.

HA: If they created their own game they would have to make a really good game. It would have to be at least as good as WoW. I don't think they want people to really know that they are being studied at any point. It might skew the results.

I don't think it would be too hard to make a game like WoW

The only reason that game succeeds is because nerds get an adrenaline rush from having better gear simply because none of us get home from work and can claim that we accomplished anything.

If you're a cubicle warrior you get a huge thrill after getting a new piece of armor from a raid, although I can't think of anything else that would make an MMO rewarding lol

However since you've read books on the subject you know that it's against the ethics of the discipline to not inform your subjects that they are being tested.

Such results could never be published today.

That's a pretty ignorant thing to say, I don't raid, I PvP, I log on and do arena, pretty successful too (Top 20 in battlegroup 1). I don't show off the gear I have, after doing arena I either log off or do some battlegrounds. I play for the competition of arena really, it's fun for me, not everyone is playing WoW so they can brag about that new weapon they may have just got.

I'd also like to figure out the reason people get this idea that "MMOs take no skill" mindset, the fact that there is people better at it than others would kind of point out otherwise. Just like an FPS you have people who are better. Most people seem to use the excuse of MMOs taking no skill because they either had a bad experience playing them or they weren't very good at them in general.

Stereotypes are fun though, I guess.
