Dell Inspiron: Make it fast!

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Well, I decided to undertake the feat of fixing my girlfriends laptop. It's a pretty good laptop, was bought maybe a year ago.

Anyway, I do CTRL+ALT+DELETE and see, get this, 50 processes running! It's putting too much strain on her computer. So, besides the obvious MSCONFIG and stopping most of her stuff on start up, what other things can I do to safely speed her computer up? Should I get some free virus checking and spyware remover? You guys suggest it!

avast! antivirus. It is very resource efficient, and is great!

Also, look at the services. Hide all of the Microsoft services and look at the ones that show up after that. Some of those are unneeded or just plain not wanted. I just did that on my VAIO and it runs much faster!
