Oh and for those who don't OC, AMD is the clear winner.

I understand this is an OC forum, but the majority does not OC.
Go back and read my post. The E4300 is cheaper and will overclock higher and thus perform better. I will say that if you have no clocking knowledge then you're wise to get a K8 at the lower price points of the market. I myself am not a nub, so I get the Core 2. Notice how I refer to them as Core 2 and K8. I don't give a monkey's about who makes the CPU, I simply buy the best product available at the time.

I have better things to do with computers rather than just talking cod crap on forums and playing games. I'm currently studying for my BSc Applied Computing (Hons), so I spend more time researching and writeing programming assignments. I view computers more as overpowered calculators these days, rather than as gameing machines.

quite true...
in short to answer the authors question, if it were me I would decide what exactly it is i want to do with the computer, and go from there.

I would then find a price range and check through various reviews and benchmarks to find what is best for me.

review as my reasoning.
that review is a joke. first of all, the date on it just three days before the E6x20s came out and Intel dropped their prices on these processors. second, the reviewer's bias became apparent right away when you see the AMD processor being cooled by a Zalman 9700 and the Intel has a stock cooler. also, the Intel processor was being run on a crap motherboard that doesn't even have an Intel chipset.

prices have changed a lot in the past few months. Intel's current $185 processor is the E6550, which performs even better at stock speed (2.33 GHz 1333 FSB).

if i was on a serious budget, i'd consider an AMD. but $185 is not too much to ask for a processor imo.

Hmmm I wouldn't call the EVGA 680i LT a "crap motherboard". It's capable of good overclocking. But yeah the stock heatsink on the intel CPU is retarded, they should have used the same 9700 cooler on both CPU to be fair.
