It's possible that your SATA HDD is operateing through the SATA RAID controller. The Vista installation DVD comes with SATA drivers in it libraries but Windows XP CD's prior to Service Pack 2 didn't have them. This is a possible cause for the installation procedure being unable to recognise the SATA HDD if the controller doesn't have any drivers.

Same thing happens to me, it says something like unknown disc in drive.

Install XP first, then Vista. You just delete all the partitions on the drive and set a partition for XP and then a partition for Vista. Order doesn't matter, but set your main one at the beginning, because the beginning of the HDD is on the outside and is accessed the fastest. I have XP on the outside, then Vista, then Storage, then Linux.
