7900GS or 8600GTS

Thread Starter
I am looking into a ~$600 build. See build thread here: http://www.overclock.net/intel-gener...ions-help.html

Trying to cut down the cost of my build, a forumer suggested going with a FOXCONN 7900GS instead of an eVGA 8600 GTS, the price difference being $34. The 7900GS benchmarks higher than the 8600GTS in most cases, however I am still leaning towards the 8600GTS due to its DX10, of which most future games will be.

Am I wrong to think that the 8600GTS will, in the future, be a better performer than the 7900GS?

I also figured that the drivers are probably more mature for the 7900GS than the 8600GTS, which may be a reason it is currently benching higher.

Both seem very overclockable.

What do you think? 7900GS or 8600GTS? I am leaning towards the 8600GTS.

Anything I should know?

I have a 8600gt and have previously owned a XFX7900gs. I would say performance wise they were very similar because I dont go by benches but actually played some newer games on them both (NWN2). I personally like the fact that the 8600 is DX10 capable. If I did it again I would get the 8600gts but I may end up getting the 8800gts if nothing new comes out.

Yeah the 8600gts would be your best bet, dx10 is immature now but if you plan on having the same card for a year I think dx10 will be pretty prevalent by then.

I would go for the 8600 GTS, buy a nice cooler with it and overclock it as high as it can handle. I have one and I get around 60 FPS with all setting on highest, shadows OFF, 2x AA @ 1440x900 in F.E.A.R. Combat.

I say 7900gs to its been shown that the 8600gt/gts is going to suck in dx10 unless they really improve the code alot.

Well Nvidia is notorious for updating drivers constantly. You can bet support for older cards will slowly diminish as well. I know I owned a 6800 and drivers for it became less frequent once it got old.

7900GS is better in DX9 i found a review where they over clocked them and the GS was still faster lets see if I can find it.

Quote:
After all, the 7900 GS offers significantly more memory bandwidth thanks to its 256-bit wide memory bus. The only advantage the 8600 GTS has is its extreme core and memory clock frequencies, which become less of an advantage once the 7900 GS is overclocked. At the end of the day if I had my pick between existing 7900 GS graphics cards or a new 8600 GTS graphics card, there is little chance I would pick the Direct X10 compliant product. It is our opinion that the 7900 GS is still the superior product despite its lack of DX10 support!

You're not wrong to think that at all; your statement is pretty true, actually. This fact lies in the main distinction between the two cards. The 8600GTS is DX10 compatible, whereas the 7900GS is not. Performance-wise, looking at the numbers in a review of the 8600- and 8500-level cards, they're not all that different from a 7900GS. And (speaking from personal opinion) if the difference is 30 bucks, I mean, that's pretty negligible.

Bottom line- two similarly-priced, similar-performing cards in today's games? One with next-gen compatibility? Go next-gen.
