No because in todays apps (DX9) you can get a faster GPU for the same amount of money, who would pick the slower one. See Crysis is DX10 and DX9 it would be smarter for him to run it on DX9 on a 7900GS then on a 8600GTS in DX10 as it looks now it wont do to hot all the DX10 demos have been with 8800GTX's. Then if he reverts to DX9 it will run slower on the 8600GTS.

Yea i would have to agree with born.. I know that in DX9 the the 7900s will do way better. With that being said get 7900s the drivers are well too!

Granted but the 8600 will play games just fine on DX9 unless you are from another planet and can see over 60fps. Also you will see more driver improvement for newer hardware compared to old. Older hardware is probably maxed out on driver support at this point anyhow while newer hardware will have more growth.

For someone who is on a tight budget and a new-rig in-the-making such as the OP I'd recommend the 8600 series cards. But for those who already have the 7900 or 7 series there's not point in upgrading to that card.

Since the budget is around 600 for the system I really can't recommend the 8800 GTS 320mb although i think its one of the best bang for the buck cards out there right now. Maybe you can save a little b4 you decide which one to buy?

IF i had to pick between those two cards, i'd probably go with the 8600 simply because it has a better architecture and can do HDR and AA simultaneously. nVidia 7-series owners don't know what they're missing with that HDR/AA handicap.

however, in that same price bracket, i'd pick a Radeon X1950 Pro over those two GeForces any day of the week. HDR/AA simultaneously, plus tons of raw power for all current games.

Something to keep in mind is that both drivers for the card as well as current DX10 implementations are immature now. Both of these will improve and I'm sure we'll see the benchmarks for the 8XXX series improve with them.

I say the 8600 if your gonna run alot of dx10 games, but ill go with the 7900 if running dx9 & dont care about dx10 yet.as you can see am gaming on a 7900 gs card & every game i throw at it i put them on max & its no problem.this card is runnin games like a beast so like i said if you dont care about dx10 then thats the card until your redy for that 8800.

you obviously haven't thrown the latest games at it . don't take the above post to mean a 7900GS can play any game at max settings - not by a long shot.

i agree with what he said about not caring about DX10 right now though. it's a joke. it's been pushed back again and again and we have nothing to show for it. don't buy a video card strictly based on what you think DX10 might be or how it will perform. nobody knows right now.

My 8600gt also runs much cooler than the 7900gs ever did. There is improved architecture in these new cards and with future driver updates you will see even better performance.

Where did i say it can play any game on max?we all know that it cant play everygame thats out on max.About the latest games your right about not playing the latest games...thats cause it no game thats out at the moment that excites me..FPS wise.

The only games that i have installed right now is COD2,CS:S,NFSC,2142,FEAR,Just Cause & that about it...SOF2 old school style.Tell me a good FPS thats out & ill go get it & pop it in...2142 i dont really like but i got it for free so i cant complain,CS:S whats with the "no ability to lean"?i play cod2,sof2 & nfsc all day.
