7900GS or 8600GTS - Page 4

Thread Starter
I couldn't decide between the 7900GS and the 8600GTS, so....

I went with the eVGA 8800GTS 320MB.

Hopefully it is a little better card, and worth the extra $100 I think it will be.

good choice i thk the 8600 would be a let down when dx10 games start coming out so far looks like dx10 is going bring the best cards to thier knees.

Would everybody just please stop bashing DirectX 10, I've downloaded the World in Conflict Multiplayer BETA and Nvidia's new driver and I get an average of 30+ FPS, with ALL settings on HIGHEST, Shadows OFF, 2x AA @ 1440x900 IN DIRECTX 10!

Believe me when I say that 2 OC'ed 8600 GTS's in SLI will own every game at a decent resolution with decent settings.

Sorry for my English.

That game uses DX10 for cosmetic effects like volumetric lighting, its has DX10 "effects" its not really a DX10 game. Its superb DX9 game.

nobody knows what DX10 will be like. it almost seems like even Microsoft doesn't know for sure yet.

? ... No offense but that made no sense.
(It has all the DirectX 10 effects but it isn't really Directx 10?)

BTW, then Directx 10 exclusive games will probably run even better.

I have to agree with that too. Because every DX update since DX 6 has been nothing but effects. In other words what makes a dx capable card is it has hardware on the card that allows it to run those effects without having to do it in software mode. Thats why you can take an old dx card run a program called 3Danalyzer on it to run newer games but the effects are run in software mode which of course reduces performance or can be turned off all together. Thats why you can play dx 9 games on a dx 7 card with effects turned off with little to no performance hit.

Heres a link to 3danalyzer for those who never heard of it. Dont be surprised to see old video cards running exclusive dx10 games but without dx10 effects or reduced performance with effects running in software mode.

it seems to me like a lot of the latest demanding games were coded badly from the start anyway. STALKER is a pile of garbage, a lot of people seem to agree that DiRT is a lot more demanding than it should be. Splinter Cell: Double Agent and Rainbow 6 Vegas are typical Ubisoft 360 ports - just awful.

HL2 and CoD2 are both shining examples of how smoothly a PC game can run when it's coded well imo. even FEAR is a good example, despite its lack of widescreen support.

it just seems like us PC gamers are getting more and more console ports, and our hardware requirements have gone through the roof. i sure hope Crysis is coded well.
Lets not forget Supreme commander. That game brought a 8800 GTX to its knees

The OP has a budget of $600 for the entire system so he can't go SLI.
Therefore he can only go with one card.
