sli x2 7950gt's or get one 8800 ultra?

Thread Starter
Am planning on getting a 22" monitor as a finishing (but not really) touch to my setup. i know running at native resolutions of around 1680 x 1054 will push my current setup hard so i'll need to be thinking of upgrading graphics. Would it make sense to sli my bfg 7950 gt 512 or just get one a these ultra's i keep reading about?
Thanx

If you have the $$$$ get the ULTRA...But you could SLI the GTX for a few dollars more.

Well I would just sell your current card and get a 8800 GTX. While the ultra is better then the GTX, it really isn't worth the extra price unless you want the best of the best .

If you have the money, get the Ultra. Otherwise just grab another 7950 and you'll be fine.

my card sli'ed wouldn't outperform a gtx? ofcourse they'll be overclocked. my current gpu clocks are 603/813.

I'm going to have to say no. The 8800gtx beat or equalled the x1950 crossfire setup (I think it's a steady win for the gtx now with newer drivers). The x1950 CF was the champ of dx9, so the GTX should be noticably better then a 7950 SLi setup.

Also take into account that you should be able to find a buyer now for your 7950, and the 8800gtx will be sellable later. If you go SLi 7950, they will be much harder to get rid of next time you want to upgrade.

At Tom's Hardware they don't have 7950GT in SLI, but for reference you can compare single card SM2.0 as well as SM3.0 scores. I still think the 8800GTX would outperform your cards in SLI.

SM3.0
8800GTX: 5781

7950GT: 2701

SM2.0
8800GTX:5401

7950GT:2560

Edit: You know those scores won't be doubled by SLI, so it's pretty safe to say you'd get more performance from a single 8800GTX.

I, personally, would think a single 7950GT could hold you over until the dubbed "9800GTX" comes out.. but it's your call.

Hmm. What i really want to know is if i'd be able to compete with the 9 series ( or come close to) via overclocking with a GTX. I am preparing my system for future games, mainly UT2007. Oh and which will be the most hasle to cool down? gtx's or ultra's?

Two 7900GTX's in SLi perform worse than one 8800GTX. So, one 8800GTX or Ultra then SLi later.
