Epic Vice President: Console Limitations to Stifle PC Games - Page 7

I was making the same point as this article down in the gaming forums a week or two ago, actually. Nobody liked to hear it then, apparently no one likes to hear it now.

Yes, PCs are upgradable...but if you're honest about it, the PC gamers who actively do that sort of thing spend a fair amount of money on their hobby. Cripes, a mid-range video card costs as much as a Wii; and a high-end video card, the one you probably want to upgrade to if you're serious about this, is as much as a PS3. And let's not forget about the inevitable march of recommended RAM, it seems like we need to add another gig or two every two years.

So again, this was a point I was making somewhere else a week or two ago: the argument that you have to replace a console every five years, and that PCs are better because you can upgrade them instead, is a complete straw man. Most "real" PC gamers replace the main components of their PC every few years, probably at a more rapid pace and at greater expense than pure console gamers.

To the three of you, I completely freakin agree. You are wise beyond your years.

All in all, in my opinion, a true gamer only cares about the games themselves. I don't care what it's on; if the game is made of win, that's where my money goes. Period.

Who cares if it's on a PC or a console, or if you use a controller or a keyboard/mouse, as long as have the time of your life playing it!

Nope.... Sorry... Cant have the time of my life playing FPS games with a controller stick... just doesnt work. I dont want my domed to get peached before I can turn to see who is shooting every five seconds.

I challenge any player with a stupid stick controller on an FPS to get their dome rocked...

PEACH!

Peach?

Anyway, I don't think anyone will argue that keyboard+mouse is the best control scheme for FPS fames. (Well, that's not true...someone will always argue.) But that's not relevant to the original point that Epic was making. Console games outnumber PC gamers, and the margin will continue to grow. The simple economics therefore make it untenable to design games that only work on PCs; they must cater to console gamers.

If anyone is asserting that PC gamers should stop playing PC gamers and adopt console gaming as their new religion, that's misguided. Play what makes you happy. Just be prepared to see fewer "blockbuster" PC games that aren't possible on a console; that's going to be business suicide for developers in time.

PEACH = Ask Val... Something I picked up from him. Sort of inside I guess...lol

Where are the statistics that say console gamers outnumber PC gamers? Who polled? What were their methods? It doesnt add up to say that they outnumber by a large margin. It may seem that way to some but not necessarily entirely true.

What are we talkin (60/40 70/30 55/45) percentage wise? I mean the thousands upon thousands that play counterstrike and BF2 alone... Not to mention the amount of hours that are put in. I think that my longest CS:S streak was some 13 hours or some insane $&#^...

I would pay embarrassing amounts of money to play CS:S. I think steam/valve missed the mark on that one. It should have been CS:S as the headline and HL2 as the game extra IMO.

There is such a viable, profitable market for PC games that if these developers drop off. Ill make my own PC game developing company and target PC gamers. If the game is tight... PC gamers will pay for it and a whole crap load of them as well. Money is made period.

If you have to ask me I think some of these console makers are trying to bully gamers into consoles. More software security for them and more money in their pockets.

Everybody wants a niche market cause its easy to fufill demands and has a lot less overhead. Greed... greed... greed... nothing makes me sadder than greed.

I guess you've got me there, I've been swayed by the many articles I've read over the years that say things of this sort. After spending a few minutes on Google though, it is proving more difficult than I expected to find hard numbers that compare PC game sales to console game sales. There are zillions of console-vs-console comparisons. There are also many articles, going back several years, claimning that console sales are trending upwards; and separate articles claiming that PC game sales are trending down. No luck finding one that compared the two that wasn't at least four years old, though. (Interestingly, I did see one that claimed that PC games sales trended way up in the first six months of 2007...something like 47% year-over-year.)

So the only thing I can offer to support my belief, which I still hold, is a direct head-to-head comparison of single titles. Again from Google, it looks as if Halo 2 has sold roughly 6.4 million copies. Half-Life 2, a game which all PC gamers seem to adore, was at 1.7 million. The problem is that the true HL2 numbers cannot be known because Steam downloads are not included in those numbers. I would expect the total number to be twice what the retail number is.

I'm sure that PC online gaming will not be free forever. Once Microsoft establishes its beachhead with Live integration, the precedent will be set and everyone will be doing it.

That's what I used to want to do for a living. How the heck did I end up doing this instead...?

Absolutely. They're going towards consoles because it's a safer economic bet.

It's not that Console gamers outnumber PC gamers....

It's..

Legit Console sales own Legit PC sales...
Legit Console + Pirate version both are killed by pirated PC games (numbers wise)..

I can't find any solid numbers but logically that makes sense..

I can never play a console.
I hate the controls and the fact it doesn't have 99% of the stuff a PC can offer which are unrelated to games. Compare a new PC to a new console, and although the PC is more expensive, it's an all-in-one that does everything better than the console (with the right hardware), so it's not a jack of all trades, but a master of all trades.
