Noob Intel Overclock Question

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
Hi all,

I have a very basic overclocking question. Recently, I have been viewing a lot of threads about the Q6600. I haven't purchased a PC in many years and it is time to upgrade. I'm not a serious gamer, but I do run simultaneous applications including some web development/programming tools. I like the Q6600 for my purposes. I also don't care about big overclocking gains. I'm not a true overclocker I just want to get as much (safe) extra juice as I can out of my stock setup....well, I would consider better fans if it comes down to it but no water.

I've been trying to read up on the Q6600. Several threads about the new stepping and which board is best to overclock with caught my eye. Long story short...I gave in and bought a HP8120N (Q6600 P965),
http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/sh...&lang=en&cc=us

So, now that I have it and set it up I begin to wrestle with Vista application compatibility and whether or not I should try and blow XP on this box. My mind also wonders to how much I can overclock and so I begin my Internet research again. So, what do I discover that I did not notice before? A few threads stating that you cannot overclock machines bought from manufacturers like HP, Gateway, etc...

Then some hope as I read a couple of posts that mention the possibilities of doing it with the help of some applications. So, it sounds like I've gone about this all wrong if overclocking is one of my goals. I can still return the computer, but I have a week or two to play around before I have to. I'm tempted to keep it, as I got it for $950.00 after a $200.00 rebate. It is still a sweet box for my application.

Is it possible to successfully overclock this box or have I jumped without a life preserver? Thanks in advance for helping a noob out.

if u want to blow away 950 dollars u can overclock with a program, speedfan have so overclocking features. but if ure smart u can do 2 things replace the motherboard with a new one, thats what i would do or u can return the computer and build ureself a computer which will be much more expensive. i would recommend to buy a new motherboard that supports quad core.

If you're going to spend the $300 on a Q6600 you might as well get a better mobo for $100 more and unleash it's true power. What you're talking about doing is similar to a Lamborghini with Hubcaps or a $200 a bottle wine served with dominos pizza.

Please tell me you did not buy a $1,200 machine with a 7300LE and gimp board... >.< Oh man you should have really come to us first.

Q6600 = $300
Good OCing Board = $100
4GB DDR2 800 = $140 (which would blow that DDR2 533 in your away)
Harddrives and DVD/CDF drives = $100
Case = $60
PSU = $140 (at the most)
8800GTS = $300

like $200 cheaper for a lot better stuff in it. Yeah I realize Vista Home Premium is like $150 OEM but I still beat the quality for the same price then.

See if you can get your money back then post a thread titled "Need a Q6600 Build" in Intel - General. That is if you want to overclock, if you're happy with your performance then don't worry about it.

First off, I think I read your entire post and others should have done the same. Anyway, you should return the box and get a refund while you still have time and people here will help you configure a very suitable system to build in place of it. There are tons of resources all over the net that you can use to learn to build your first system and even some FAQs you can read here that will help. But the bottom line is that system won't overclock and the video card is completely insufficient.

That's a bit offtopic but, 5-7-7-19, 2.4v I never bothered to tighten them because they perform the same but become less stable.

Thread Starter
Thanks for the feedback everyone. Most of it was very helpful. I was a little apprehensive, as this was my first post, but I'm happy there was no flaming due to my "overclocking ignorance", lol.

Overall, I think I feel too restricted with this box. I don't like being told what I can and can't do with something once I've paid for it. As much as it hurts, I think I'll pack it up and take it back this weekend. I'm sure the store manager will be thrilled

After that, I'll read some more and maybe post a thread asking for assistance with my Q6600 build. I know I want a modestly overclocked (needs to be stable and reliable on air cooling) box for < $1500.00. I think this is reasonable from what I have learned so far. No $5000.00+ box for me!

Every time I buy something I always try to look at the price/performance curve. There is always that sweet spot where you begin to pay a lot more for just a little more performance. I think that spot may be between $1000.00 and $2000.00 when building a box. After that, it looks like the cost per performance starts to shoot through the roof. Anyway, I'm rambling.

Thanks for your help!

Hey post a "I need a Q6600 Build" thread in this forum.

I'm compiling a list of things right now. You need monitor and stuff?
