Gaming Build for around $1k

Thread Starter
Hey guys. I'm planning on building a new rig but I haven't been keeping up with the latest products for the last year or so since C2D came out. I am planning on over clocking the rig so high quality parts are a must. Here are some ideas:

CPU: I think a C2D would probably be better than a Quad for Gaming purposes. Am I right?
GPU: The 8800GTS is looking tasty but maybe I'm being a bit overzealous?
MOBO: Gigabyte 965P DS3 is one that I've heard good things about...
RAM: Probably 2GB but I'm not sure what kind

I've never had a good OC rig before so I would appreciate some help picking PSU and Cooling stuff too.

Also, on a less important note, you guys know of any good deals on LCD monitors?

I know you guys probably get tired of all these "Help me build a new rig" threads but if you guys could help me out I'd be very grateful!

He asked about deals on LCD's so maybe he wants to upgrade.

In the online deals section, there's a deal on a 22" Acer widescreen, runs 1680x1050 and is $180 at BestBuy right now.

If you can afford the extra $20, I beleive the gigabyte P35 board offers the same overclocking functions as the 965P DS3 but with the more recent and superior P35 chipset.

$120 for a case is pretty expensive. But since it has spots for 3 fans and probably can easily fit any GPU, I guess it may be worth it although I think there must be a cheaper one.

The mobo looks like a keeper though, from the reviews.

The GPU makes me want to weep from joy....

For the CPU, I was thinking more along the lines of E6600. Why do you recommend E6750? It has the same amount of cache. Is it a better OC'er? The pricing is about the same so it's not a big deal, but I'm just curious why you picked this one? Is it just because of the clock speed difference?

The RAM looks like it has compatibility issues with many boards, will it be ok with the mobo you recommended? On the mobo specs it says it's mem standard is DDR2 667, not DDR2 800 like this.

The HD is OK although I might go for a bit more memory.

I don't know much about heatsinks/fans? Is that a good one?

What about PSU? Any recommendations?

Thanks

E6600
GA-P35-S3L

8800GTS 320MB is pretty good in most cases, I wouldn't go any lower.

DDR2 800 will work fine. I like OCZ Gold personally, has done at least 1Ghz in the last 4 sets I've bought. Two have done 1040Mhz, I kept those

Heatsinks/Fans? Hmm get a cheap Xion Stacker for $80 and slap three 120mm thunderblades in it, there excellent airflow I thing >$100 cases are a ripoff. AC 7 Freezer is best for the money, Or A scythe/tuniq tower-type cooler is also good. You can switch the fans out in it to improve cooling more.

Those cpus are a bit high for their promise. The E6750 at 230$? why not get the Xeon Quad core X3210 for 255$ instead?

As for motherboard, honestly, chipsets right now dont matter if you get 650i, 680i or P35, unless you plan on DDR3 or SLI. If you plan on ddr3 get the gigabyte combo board P35C-DS3R. If you plan on SLI, get the P5N32 Sli 680i if you dont plan on ddr3 or sli, get the P5nE-sli or the gigabyte GA-965-DS3 or heck, the GA-P35-DS3L
