No joy with this 8600GTS

Thread Starter
Got an 8600 GTS from Best Buy to check it out. (In the process of upgrading everything)

It won't be my final card which is why I got it from Best Buy to see where I was at CPU-wise etc with the games I want to play. It showed me that I will need to build a new PC.

Anyway to the point....for some reason I can not get a decent OC out of this thing. I have the BFG8600 256???MB OC. Funny story, I called BFG the day I got this because my sound card did not work after plugging this card in, the guy didn't even know they had a 256MB version, kept telling me I must have an 8800.

Stock is 710/1008

Well, I can not OC this thing at all really. I can get the memory clock 1100mHz, and it will be fine and dandy. If I push the Core to 730 even I will get get hellacious artifacts in the midst of playing World in Conflict for about 10 minutes or so, which forces me to reboot to clear it up.

I was hearing that people were tearing these things up.

Cooling should not be an issue I have a shop fan blowing right into the case an case and GPU temp stays about 70-75C under load.

What do you think is the deal? I am also using ATITool to OC. When I run the Find Core the thing will eventually kirk out and die.

Ive had BFG overclocked version cards and could never get them to overclock much. It could be they have them overclocked as much as they can go without voltmods or what have you. Thats a pretty good stock overclock. Remember not every video card is built the same so some may overclock better. Could try some better cooling. If your dissapointed you could always return it and get the 8800gts.

i got the 8600gt and mine overclocks nicely, but even after OC it still doesn't get as high as your is stock. i've heard the GTS don't overclock quite as much because they are factory overclocked right?

those overclocks dont seem too low. that might be your limit without volt-mods. i hope you dont plan on returning that card to best buy, they charge a 15% re-stock fee on high dollar items no-exception.
