It's also nearly impossible to get tired of the mainstream games with big backings. Why? There are countless mods. When you get tired of Half Life: 2, try the insurgency mod. Tired of Counterstrike Source? Download new skins you approve of and new maps. My favorite, cs_office_unlimited.

Best approach, try betas / demo's / trials.

Lost Planet looks pretty decent, depends on what you enjoy. Newer isn't always better. I still play BF2 over BF 2142. And it matters your type of gameplay, CSS is fast paced, BF2 you can camp the same spot sniping for an hour.

The Flight Sim IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 is really realistic and fun. As the year implies it's World War II fighters and bombers. I play it on hyperlobby, there's over a thousand players, very active, lots of fun with servers where you've got 40 players flying around shooting eachother down.

check it out.
