overclocking Q6600 on air

Thread Starter
HI I was wondering if I can overclock a Q6600 to 3ghz or 3.2ghz using a BigTyphoon and an iCute s901 5G1 BB case with a 25cm side fan. Planning to get p5k deluxe mobo.

Thanks I was also wondering if the Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4 DDR2-800 2GB Kit CL4-4-4-12 would be sufficient to help overclock to 3ghz? DDR2 1066 RAM in NZ cost about $700

i dont know how well that ram overclocks but you can always put on dividers if it doesnt oc to well.

How far can I push the Q6600 before I have to overclock my RAM? I'm also on B3 stepping My RAM may not be the best.

well as you increase the fsb the ram speed increases. So to counter this you can raise the divider between the memory and the fsb. IM not really sure how it works technically but in easy terms it limits the ram to a lower speed thus taking it out of the equation for the overclock instablity. So if you run into mem temps just change the diveder to lower the mom clock. And just keep an eye on your temps.

With DDR2 800 RAM you can overclock your Q6600 to 3.6 GHz (400x9) before you may have to run a divider.

A Q6600 at a stock speed of 2.4 GHz you actually have to run a divider to raise the RAM speed, otherwise it would be running below spec (266x2 = 532 MHz, well below the 800 MHz your RAM is rated at).

The RAM you have is fine to overclock with.

So actually, when you raise the CPU FSB the ram frequency goes up by itself also?

By default they're linked together in a ratio. Some motherboards have the option to unlink the ram. Others only have the ability to set the ratio (i.e. 1:1, 2:3, 4:5, etc).
