Help: Desktop Build ~$1500 USD total

Thread Starter
Hello all, I am new to the forums and entirely new to building a comp on my own. I have always purchased from dealers such as dell or hp, but now I think it's time I learn to take care of myself.

I'd like some help on building a new desktop for *crosses fingers* $1500 maximum.

I'm interested in overclocking if that is indeed the best option, but I've heard good things about the Q6600 quad processor that is out there as well.

I am interested in gaming with high graphics and really reliable speeds. I don't need to have a massive monitor (17inch or 19inch would be plenty large enough) and the monitor doesn't have to be great (but a solid decent is a must)

I don't even know where to begin...any and all help is appreciated greatly!!

if I could get it for closer to $1200 that would be absolutely ideal, but I don't know where prices even start at...I could make $1500-1600 work, but it would definitely be a squeeze

Well I just kind of went for the $1,500 budget. There are many things here that you could change out to help lower your price. Some things would be a cheaper case, not the XXX edition of the 8800, or a different PSU. This is just another opinion.

I guess things I am going to need:

cpu
hd (do I need 2 hd's if I am wanting to partition vista/linux?)
graphics card
mobo
ram
power supply
basically I need everything that is needed when building a comp from complete scratch-->this will be my first desktop I've ever had personally, so I am not sure of everything I will need
