I dont think the xbox is doomed not at all i just think dvd's will reach their limit in this generation for certain types of games i.e. RPG , adventure. ON the other hand arent pc's a little different with the whole installing thing. Do they compress data more and take advantage of hard drives. IT seems to me like you cant compare pc's when it comes to game size on disk because they end up being huge once you install them. NOw i could be wrong that was more of a question.

Let me correct your comment on PC games doing fine..... They are compressed big time... Bigger than any console play off disc compression..... Which allows them to be extracted onto the HDD of a pc.

And also... PGR isn't a game which would need to use a DVD9 to its full capacity....

Like i have already said.... DVD9 is about to reach its limit of use which means games will be limited to its size whereas PS3 developers have a massive 45GB to play with....

Sure i agree that at this moment in time that much space isn't needed but very shortly it will be...

I wasn't singling you out with my 360 is doomed comment. Just a comment to all.

Of course this very well may be the last generation of DVD9. That's why Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are out right now. Whichever comes out on top, which will take some time, will be the main format. Even then, DVDs will still be around. PCs and consoles both have compression and decompression. Consoles don't do as much but most have hard drives nowadays for cache.

There's nothing to correct. DVDs in consoles utilize compression technology as well. They don't install in a typical PC sense but they cache data on a console's hard drive. Except for the 360 core, the 360 still has a hard drive to use as does the PS3. This entire issue gets out of hand all the time on PC centric forums. Consoles are fine. Until we see proof otherwise and developers complaining, it's a useless argument.

Why you would comment on whether PGR would use a full DVD9 is irrelevant. You don't know that. You aren't a PGR developer. I'm not gonna get into a pointless argue about that. As it stands, PGR developers themselves, Bizarre, said DVD9 is fine.

People seem to think just because Blu-Ray has space means that developers can take advantage of it at the snap of a finger. Do you realize how much longer development time would be if a developer tried to fill a Blu-Ray disc? Not to mention Blu-Ray space thus far has been used for data redundancy because the read/ seek times are so slow. So developers put the same data on different places on the disc so loading is quicker.

Don't misinterpret me. The next generation of consoles will most likely support Blu-Ray/ HD-DVD even if those formats have not yet become as prevalent as standard DVDs. I'm not debating that. But for now, DVD is fine. As I said, until I see otherwise, I don't see the big deal.

And DVD9 supports ~8 gigs. MGS2 was just fine on PS2 and Xbox. It only needs to unpack assets when they are accessed whereas a PC installs everything at one time, despite only needing access to that data at certain times. See the difference there? It only decompresses the data when it's accessed.

Thenut is correct. The point i was trying to put across was that at this point onwards, it is pointless making new versions of consoles with only a normal DVD9 drive.

At present the games fit onto a dvd9 disc but like i already said.... Some games push this limit which is why discs with larger capacities will be the way foward.

And also.... i have to add... the comment on consoles cache'ing to their HDD's is true.... This is also one of the reasons for the unusually long loading times and start up times on some games.

I dont think microsoft can start making games for HD-DVD, they already said they wouldn't and if they did people would be forced to buy a new console, or get the attachment to play on the console. The 360 + HD-DVD addon is more than the PS3. They would loose alot of customers by doing something like adding a built in HD-DVD to future consoles. I think theyd be forced to replace all current consoles or atleast offer a step up program for all consoles under warranty.

People bought the 360 to play games, and if games start using HD-DVD on it then the console it worthless for the people who can't afford the addon, or a new revision of the console. They should of used HD-DVD from the start and just made the console $600 like the PS3.

Most people would agree. New consoles will include support for the new format(s). There's a reason we're having an HD format war right now. The winner will end up being the next big format the public uses. From games to movies.
