What kind of compressor do you use for phase? What could I take one out/off of?

Answer your second one first; any system that has been properly evacuated of its refrigerant. More likely though, from a window ac (will give you a fairly large, and oversized, and overly powerful, rotary compressor, or a better reciprocating can be bought from www.under-the-ice.com, or any other HVAC supplier (many won't work with walk ins though).

Possibly, but not by much. Runmc at under the ice only stocks the best compressors for single stage systems, but there are cheaper, smaller, less powerful, and or simply much louder compressors around.
Frosty freeze on ebay also has some matsush ita rotary compressors for cheap. (Its one word, but a certain four letter s word in it gets bleeped)
