3 hd for raid 0?

Thread Starter
i currently have 2 wd 250 gig hard drives in raid 0, can i add a third drive and still run raid 0? ive been reading all over the place, and such info is so scattered....

i would get an identical 250 gig wd drive when i get my new case. would i get a decent gain from adding a third hd for raid 0? it would seem to me that striping data across 3 drives would make it quicker than two....

on another note, if i was to get a 750 gig wd drive after adding the third 250 gig drive, i could run a raid 5 setup, right? have 3- 250 gig drives in raid 0, and the 750 for raid 5, for security of data purposes?

and, if i was to get the third 250 gig drive and add it to the system for raid 0, would i have to reformat and start all over again, or could i just add it and have the system rebuild the raid array? how easy is it?

sorry for all the newb questions, but for all my many years as pc for my hobby, this is my first experience with raid. ive been running my raid setup for about a month now.

and BTW, im using the onboard intel raid controller on my P5B-Plus mb, if that makes a difference.

and on a second thought. if the raid 0 with 3 drives is doable, i may just get an external 500 gig hd and use that for backup, my backup consists mainly of home videos that i make with my mini dv camcorder and the wifes digital cam pictures, nothing major, but would be a beotch to loose..... so the external drive wouldnt have to be part of the raid array, as it would seldom be used/accesed. i could just use the external drive as a backup drive through usb 2.0, or external sataII connector? then it wouldnt be part of the raid array?

any input is appreciated.

As far as I know, you can only use two drives for RAID0. With RAID0+1, you can use four drives, if that helps. I have heard of RAID5, but I don't know much about it, honestly.

I would just use RAID0 with two drives, and keep a drive out of the array for storage/backups/etc.

EDIT: Really Duckie? I was not aware of that.

Yes, you can add a third HD and make a 3x RAID0 fine. Performance will gain.

No, on the RAID5. As in all RAID, the HD sizes should be the same or you will lose the any storage larger than the smallest drive. RAID5 is not recommended without a $200+ RAID smart card.

Yes, whenever changing an array, you will need to reformat everything. You can use Norton Ghost or Acronis to make an image of your current data.

I was wondering about the same thing. I'm gonna have 2x 320GB HD in RAID 0 and the third will be external for backuping up important files.

Adding a third drive will increase your performance the same ammount as adding the 2nd drive.

I've heard people raiding 4x raptors, and it equals nearly 4x faster than a single raptor.

I'm not sure what the limit is, but I know its more than 3 and you should notice a pretty big increase in transfer speeds by adding a 3rd, but theres also more of a chance for data failure.

thanks guys for the quick reply's! ill go ahead with the 3rd drive for raid0, as the price for the 250 gig wd drive is only around 80 bucks here.... and ill get a 4th drive for backup purposes using usb2 as the interface.

ill report back in this thread with my experiences.

ill be heading into the "city" mid month to get some new stuff.

ie- a mozart tx case, a pci x 1x video card for my third display, a 19" lcd (3rd display) and an external hd for backups.

then ill rebuild my whole system, taking my time to do a quality build.
