2.5" SATA HD performance?

post #1 of 8
Thread Starter
any one know how fast these work?
im looking at getting one in an external caddy and im torn between:

160gb 7200rpm seek11ms
200gb 5400rpm seek12ms
300gb 4200rpm seek12ms

how will the transfer rate vary with each?
will the rpm make much difference in this case?
will the transfers max out at the usb2 rate(480Mb/s or 60MB/s)?
or will it stick to the sata 1 speed (150MB/s)????

the caddy does do usb or esata...

all these numbers, please help chaps!

Use eSATA if possible which maxes out at 3GB/s while USB2 will only get 60MB/s. These are theortical maximums and in the real-world you will have less. This is especially true if you get the 7200RPM which should be able to around 60MB/s (or more). The rotation speed does have a significant impact.
Once again...

Why do you want a 2.5" over a regular 3.5" drive for external use? You will get more for your money with a regular 3.5"

Faster RPM = faster read and write
Those hard drives probably can't saturate the bandwidth of a USB cable just yet. Regular can't even use up ATA let alone SATA1.

I am not carry'in a 3.5 disk n caddy into Uni on a rgular basis! lol + the 3.5s draw more power and need an mains adapter , 2.5"'s mostly run off usb power

what do you mean by regular?

can any 1 guesstimate the burst speed and average read/write speed?
a little under 60MB/sec (usb max speed)???

is it worth the extra capacity over lower rpm?
xxxxxx
cheers for input so far

Why do you need that much storage? How much do you really need?

Why would you need to transport around 160GB of data even? Your not carrying movies or audio, I assume. Even if you did, do you need it all? You still need to back up all data on the portable device in case of failure, stolen, or accident. Get a 8GB flash drive and set up a FTP server!

Currently, two of the fastest 2.5" HDD are Seagate and WD.

Seagate Momentus 7200.2 (ST9160823ASG, SATA300/NCQ 160GB, 8MB Cache 7200rpm) ---> 56.5mb/sec

Western Digital Scorpio (WD2500BEVS, SATA150/NCQ, 250GB, 8MB Cache 5400rpm) ---->54.5mb/sec

So, are they identical to 3.5 HDD in term of performance? The answer is no.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (STA3400620AS, SATA300, 400GB, 16MB cache, 7200rpm)---->197mb/sec

Honestly, these data is suppose to give you just an idea between 2.5 and 3.5. Don't rely on it too much since hdd works differently in real world application than benchmarks.

transfer rate: esata---->firewire 800----->firewire 400-----USB 2.0.

I know you might say that USB 2.0's 480mb/s is faster than firewire's 400mb/s. But it is not true in real world, firewire has higher sustained transfer rate.
