Help me upgrade a prebuilt!

Okay. My friend has a cheap compaq computer, which is a surprisingly good gaming computer. It uses DDR memory and a Sempron which I assume is on a 939 socket.

It also uses Radeon Xpress 200 onboard graphics. This is the most solid set of onboard graphics I've ever seen, it blows my Dell's GeForce4 away. The onboard graphics play Half Life 2 very well and play Doom 3 at 1280 x 1024 at a good 27FPS. Not impressive really, but considering that is onboard graphics, holy hell. He has 768mb of RAM, a mixed batch.

I want to upgrade it. I have around $200 to work with. I'm sure it has PCI-xpress but I will investigate this later.

I'm thinking a 2gb dual-channel kit and a 7600GT. He has either a 250 or 350-watt power supply, and it's probably not a grand one, so I am going to need to remember that in the video card choice. I'm leaning towards a 7600GS if it can be gotten for cheaper, because I think they use less power.

What would you guys recommend?

Stay away from the 7600GS.

Semprons came in Socket A, 754, 939, and AM2. You need to verify it is 939 with CPU-Z. You will need to update that over 2GB memory. You can find a cheap used 754 or 939 for less than $50. What is the memory config right now? Maybe you can save and just get a 1.5GB. Spend the rest on a video card.
Once again...

I will verify. I know it can't be AM2 because AM2 cannot use DDR1 memory.

It is a 2.0ghz Sempron, I know that much, and I don't think it needs to be upgraded ...

He has a 256mb stick and a 512mb stick in there right now. I think a good dual-channel 2gb kit would be all the difference in the world.

Again ... I have $200 dollars to work with.

Remember, dual channel won't mean anything if it's a Socket 754 Sempron. If it is, just get a single gigabyte stick; he'll have nearly as much memory, and you'll be able to spend another hundred on other upgrades.

Well there are AM2 motherboards with DDR1 memory.. but most likely his Sempron won't be AM2.
