An OK rig upgrade?

Thread Starter
Need a suggestion. I like upgrading my rig once yearly with the mid ranged stuff that i can get at a bargain price. this year I was thinking I shall get the Asus P5WDH Deluxe motherboard, a pair of 2 Gb TwinX Corsair DDR800 ram and an E6420 processor. I Like to overclock, I dont mind if i hit a wall, as long as i reach the E6600 speeds its ok for now. What do u guys think? I mostly use it for gaming, and in future id like to Xfire my mb.

Good upgrade :-D No problems that I can see :-D. You may want to downgrade to the E4300 and spend the 70 dollars you save on an aftermarket cooler. Then you should be able to get well past the 6600 speeds and atleast up to 3.2GHz depending on the cooler you get.

Unless you will have the money to cool your 6420 later down the road, then I would get the 4300 with the cooler for the same price. But I'm guessing your on a smaller budget since you cant squeeze the extra 40 and grab a 6600 >.<.

Just an FYI.

Yeah all the C2D's will hit at least 3.2Ghz really, so I'd go with an e4300 myself and put loads into great cooling.

E4300's are especially great when OCing. The Best C2D when it comes to OCing no doubt. With proper cooling you could probably put a 4300 over 4.0GHz. a 120% overclock. insanity. I might do that.

EDIT: Of course youd have to vCore that thing sooo high it would die within 2 years, but the thing costs like no money at all.

True. SOmeone here got to 4ghz at 1.7v. scary no?

But yeah, E4300 and E6400 should oc about to the same height unless you tank and get a crappy E4300 or vice versa.

As for the board, why not get one of the P35 boards? maybe a P5K deluxe (200$ or so) or a gigabyte GA-P35-S3L or DS3 or so..(they're all the same preety much)

I upgraded to a 6420 recently and I am really impressed with it. I would definately suggest you get one. Easily got it up to 2.67ghz at 1333mhz fsb, using a zalman 9500 it idles at 33C and load at 40C.
