"Crazy" Idea to Clean Tuniq Tower 120

Thread Starter
I've had a Tuniq Tower for about a week now and after multiple laps and re-seats I've concluded that I screwed up the heatsink's heat dissipation abilities by getting the fins dirty. This probably happened when I first lapped it using the water/dishwashing liquid method I read on one of the forums (I'm pretty sure I got skin oil and dishwashing liquid in the spaces between the fins). I have a new Tuniq on the way (I upgraded to the LED version XD), which I got for $10 less than I bought the original version for on Newegg, but I figure for experimentation's sake I would like to zap the current Tower clean to see if it helps drop temps any.

What I'm thinking of doing is using a method I know works well with cleaning glass "tobacco" pipes. Basically you fill a microwave-safe bowl with isopropyl alcohol, submerge the pipe in the bowl, and nuke it for a few minutes. Since putting a large aluminum and copper heatsink in the microwave is not a good idea, I figure I can heat the alcohol first in the microwave and then submerge the Tuniq in the alcohol once I've taken the bowl out.

Thoughts? Is this insane?

When you get out of the hospital be sure to post pictures

I'd use canned air or a vacuum cleaner works well, but that's just me.

Remove the fan, Throw it in a dishwasher. Let it dry thoroughly. Mount fan back é voila! As good as new.

Haha thanks. I tried canned air but it didn't help much - some of the soap dried on the fins and is holding on pretty tightly. If I do actually do this I would use insulating gloves, stand way back and put on my lab goggles. 8)

sounds like an exceptionally bad idea, do you put spatulas in the microwave if they got dirty? no, the heat doesn't help any. Just stick with the alchohol, I do believe it is extremely tough if not impossible for you to have gotten it that crudded up with skin oil to effect temperatures by a lot.

It is air cooling, so don't expect miracles on it.

Pir that's a good idea... high heat, and no-residue cleaning solution. I like it!

If it works for car parts, it will work for a Tunic.

What i would do is another way of cleaning pipes put it in a zip lock bag and pour some rubbing alcohol with a little bit of salt in and just shake it a bit and let it sit. The salt is in there to help scrub it. then after that rinse it with what ever. I think that would work out good.

i like how you put "tobacco" pipes. . regular rubbing alch should work to get the soap off. it dosent need to be hot. put a pot of water on the stove and boil the fins then use the can of air to dry it. it will work. if you want also just soak the fins in a bowl of rubbing alch for a hour or so it should loosen that stuff right up
