graphics gods: what's the best card I can use in my system?

My power supply is a 430W Seasonic (high quality brand) with 348W to the 12V rails. +12V1 is rated @ 14 amps and +12V2 is 15 amps. Here is a link to the datasheet http://www.seasonic.com/pdf/datasheet/01PC/S12.pdf

I'm not one of those people with a whole bunch of devices leeching off my PSU as I only use one optical drive and one PCI card. I am using a single 120mm case fan.

What's the best card I can get? Are the nvidia 8000 series more energy efficient than the 7000 series?

No, I am not going to spend money on a new PSU.

No the 8 series uses much more power than the 7 series. Your PSU might be able to handle an 8800GTS though..

What about the 7900 cards? Would I be at a disadvantage using one of those over an 8600?

If your not going to get a new PSU then I would strongly reccomend a 7 series card. Especially if you want stable FPS in games due to power issues.

Anything up to about an X1950XT or 7900GTO your system could power alright.

I read something about the higher memory cards using less power. Is this due to using GDDR4 instead of GDDR3? http://theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=41327

"It seems that 1GB of GDDR-4 memory consumes less power than 512MB of GDDR-3 memory."

Iv never heared that, nearly all cards out now are GDD3 anyway. Im sure only the ATI 2900 is GDDR4

You might be able to handle a 8800 GTS just you probably shouldn't do any overclocking on your computer.

If the newer cards consumed less power why does the GTX/Ultra need TWO 6-pin power connector and the 2900XT needs a 6- and 8-pin power connector?

7900GS or X1950XT/Pro.
