I've never come across it, personally I don't put hardware on the carpet. Better safe than sorry.

so? you were just lucky. and if you have done that many times, that only means that your hardware never experienced carpet shock (static from carpet fibers) in the first place

use non static foam or plastic please, $1-2 or free....to protect an investment worth much more.

Never managed to fry anything through carpet, but I did shut down a laptop with the help of carpet.

I kept walking around a table filled with laptops, setting each one up, I was wearing heavy insulated boots, and thick wool socks, plus a heavy cotton shirt. Everytime I touched a computer my wrist would naturally rest on the finger print reader, and every single time I worked on one of those laptops, I zapped my wrist. Later I attempted to insert a USB memory card, and touched the USB slot first. I saw a 1 cm bolt jump from my finger into the USB slot. The laptop shut down, I quickly pressed the power button, and much to my supprise, it turned right back on no problems.

Other than this I never work on my computer on the floor, too uncomforable, I am lucky to have a nice workbench that I use.
