The Q6600 3.6GHz Barrier....What I found.

Thread Starter
I just finished a new system with a Q6600 on a Gig P35-DS3R. After several days trying to push past 3.6GHz, here is what I found. I ran into general instabilities with the display, user interface, blue screens, etc, starting at about 375 FSB with a x9 multi. (Also with about 440 FSB and x8 multi) Every attempt , voltage, ram settings, disabling stuff...everything...nothing helped. Coretemp reported 35~40c idle on all cores, average about 50C loaded. I set all the bios voltages, etc back to auto (375 fsb) and was adjusting my VIDEO card (Nvidia 6800) using 'Detect Optimal Frequencies' to set the video GPU and memory. The utility set them from stock (350 MHz GPU, 600MHz Mem) to an atrocious overclock--450 GPU and 850 MEM. I rebooted, took it up to 402 FSB....and booted straight into windows. I cant get it stable, but I can at a 397 fsb. Works equally well with 8 or 9 multiplier (1700FSB and 850MHz RAM speed with the x8) This leads me to believe that the PCI-E Buss Timing~ Northbridge is the issue. (specualtion, can't think of anything else) Also set PCI-E Speed to 105MHz. Almost every crash I had didn't reset parameters in BIOS (Rules out RAM, CPU as root cause) So, higher PCI-E/NorthbridgeV would probably help. Also a dual core would probably fare better. BTW, all this after I found the graphics card thing was with webcam, yahoo, USB, browser, soundcard, internet, everything in my system running...I didnt expect to get it to go that far. Now, Im benching x8 at 425 FSB (850MHz RAM) Already did some at x9 397...
This CPU performs so well it is sick.

I got my q6600 on the DS3R up to 3.829ghz (9x425) with the stock northbridge heat sink and I ran into the same issues (BSOD and other errors). I just ordered a THERMALTAKE CL-C0034 NB cooler and it should arrive today. I will let you know if it makes a difference and if I could push it any higher. Im hoping for 4.0, which would be nuts for a B3 on air.

Really? I would think that you would have had a bit of problems getting that high with your ram slots filled like that. I wanna see a validation shot of that...(not that I trust you, but the rig you have is very similar to the one that I am setting up)
