Can I set up TWO cable modems?(under one subscription)

Thread Starter
My question is simple: Can I set up TWO cable modems?(under one subscription) My purpose is: I have wireless internet but my router and modem are in the basement and I am two floors above it (thanks to vonage). This obviously causes a poorer connection on 54g. I noticed I had a working cable connection in my room. I have been searching for answers to my question the internet and on overclock.net but nothing gives me a definite no or yes. Is it possible (refer to first sentence or Thread title).

I dont want to spend even more money on better wireless adapters and routers.

No, you need a subscription for each cable modem.

My guess is you can have as many as you want. Why would the cable modem provider turn down more money?

EDIT: OH, sorry you want it for free? I doubt that.

By Cable you mean ethernet (internet cable)? if there is one, you need to know where both ends are plugged in. if your router is in the basement, hook a line from the router to one end of the cable, then plug in your computer on the other end. This would work just fine.

I have one cable subscription, and I have a router right after my modem. I then ran ethernet wires from my router, all over the house. Right now, my whole house is using the one subscription, and that includes my desktop and laptop, my parents desktop, and my sister's laptop.

His question was can he have two cable modems and pay for one account. The answer is no.

You can have more than one cable modem, but each modem requires a monthly fee.

If you have any doubts, pick up the phone can call your cable provider. They will give you your answer.

I really think that is bull. If you want cable TV you get cable and up to three separate cable boxes. at least thats what I have, but if you want more than one broadband connection you have to pay for the second. but if you want cable in every room they have no problem giving you what you want. That one internet connection is the dumbest thing I ever heard but its true.

not every1 has a way to wire their house with internet that way...and im pretty sure he doesnt want the wire running down the side of the steps...sorry to say i cant think of a way other than putting a series of access points to stenghen the signal in the house

im not sure about cable.

but dsl uses a low level signal encryption.

once one modem is hooked up and connected. the other one wont be able to connect.. (also the need for the user account and password)

with cable.

they could very well use encryption as well.

along with the fact that each cable modem has a serial number. you cannot just "swap out" a cable modem. you have to call and deactivate one and activate the other...
