6800 GT cooling really matter?

Well I know this topic might have been discussed before somewhere on the Internet (or even in this forum, I can't find it though) but like every other person who wants to play Doom3 properly I've decided to become a sheep and follow everyone else . Time for the 6800 GT.

However I've noticed that price is quite variable here in NZ. The only thing I can notice between the 6800 GT's are the GPU cooling systems incorporated. Clearly this is what you are paying for more.

My essential question is, would it matter if I purchased a GT with 'standard' cooling? The Gigabyte 6800 GT seems to be about $200 bucks cheaper then the Leadtek GT (for example), however I must admit the Gigabyte cooling does look 'less appealing' then the Leadtek.

I plan to overclock (and temperatures obviously get higher) and was wondering whether the GPU cooling system was an important factor to take into account if I plan to overclock the card to its maximized and stable state.

You could buy a third party cooler that would, more than likely, outperform the the Leadtek and be a heck of a lot cheaper. The cooling is the only thing limiting these cards though, so if you don't want to remove the stock cooling, go for Leadtek. But it doesn't matter much since overclocking immediately voids the warranty anyway. Just about everyone I've talked to with a GT has been able to hit Ultra speeds with stock cooling, so it all depends on how much you want to OC and how nice of a chip you get.

Thanks for your input phlegm!

However is there anyone else who has an opinion for this topic? Just trying to get as much feedback as possible, so that I can make a decision sometime soon.

Cheers.

Are there any specific aftermarket cooling kits that can purchased specifically for the 6800 GT?

All I did was leave the slot below my 6800 GT open, remove the metal tab in the case from that open slot (where the jacks would appear on the back of the PC if you put a card in there) to create a rear exhaust hole, and let the inward air pressure push air past the GPU and out the exhaust hole. Since I have read that people are OCing GTs to Ultra speeds on stock cooling, I don't see any reason to do any more than this.

(I haven't OCed my card yet, but I plan to.)

Just make sure you have a decent airflow in your PC and the stock cooling should be fine for OCing.

If you have a side fan it helps alot if you have it set on intake rather that out take... These do disrupt the proper flow of air but they do help alot with cooling GPU.

I haven't seen any retail air cooling solutions specifically for the 6800's yet, but they'll probably be everywhere in a month or so. I have stock cooling and can hit upwards of 435 with the case on, so cooling is only an issue for extreme overclocks.

well that genraly happens when some new peace of hardware comes
out, after all it takes time to studdy the design, and make an apropreatly
suited probuct for it.

Thanks peeps. Some good comments.

As I stated in the above, I just wasnt sure whether it was worth forking out that extra for a card with a more 'appealing' heat sink and fan. Its just everywhere the Gigabyte range is substantially cheaper and was a little uncertain as to why they were so much cheaper.

I'll be happy to get an overclock of 410/1100 and I'm pretty sure stock cooling will be sufficient enough.

There is air cooling available from vga for the 6800 series here is a link:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...186-120&depa=0

Dang over $50! They must be crazy!

Now if you want to do it right you buy this and BLAM!!!!

http://www.dangerden.com/mall2/more_...asp?fmmore=237

One heck of an oc with that puppy!

The cooling leadtek puts on their 6800gt and ultra is way better than the generic cooling that comes stock on all the other company's cards and I bet if you tested it side by side with that $55 vga silencer they probably would be putting out the same performance. I have heard that people are able to oc the leadtek 6800 ultra on stock cooling another 30-40mhz very easily. That is a really nice oc on an ultra chip which is already almost maxed out. I will be getting the leadtek 6800 ultra in a couple weeks and I will definitely let everyone know how good the stock cooling is.

I really want one of those dangeden blocks though.

475mhz and a drop of 30c..jesus that whips an ultra extreme!

On another note check out this awesome nv40 core cooler. I wonder if it is as good or better than a dangeden.
