Is it better to always keep your PC on or turn it off nightly? - Page 6

I put it to standby during the night because I can't sleep with the lights and the noise. Although if I'm downloading something overnight I'll keep it on.

I like standby because it's an instant resume and it shuts down everything (except RAM).

On 24/7.

It will hurt your components more over time to keep turning it off/on then to just leave it running.

One thing to note is the temperature flux after the machine is off. Once the machine is turned off temperatures increase significantly since there are no fans to dissipate the heat. After while the machine turns cold and then repeats the cycle.

Think if you were to repeat this process 5 times a day. It creates much more strain on the system than to just leave it on.

I realize that the fans aren't spinning, but the components aren't powered either, therefore the system should not be creating any more heat once it is off. It will just cool down slowly.

BTW, I on in the "on" camp...i fold 24/7...with exceptions for when I am playing games!

I leave my computer on all the time, if I shut off, then I will not have anything to watch when I get home from work. They need to make a power mode for MCE, that just power the necessaries to record tv, and leave everything else off.

Now the notebook computer in the living room is a different story, I turn that off when I am not using it, which is only when I am in the living room watching tv, or sitting on the porcelain throne. If I left that thing on all the time, I'd be afraid of burning down the house.

Like the others that fold 24/7, so mine is on 24/7.
Standby for more than occasional use.
Shut it down if you don't use it regularly.

Some BIOS have the option to reduce fan speed...
Then there is Cool N Quiet too but its a pain when OCing.

Thanks guys.

Looks like I will be keeping my PC on, but I will also activate system standby after 1 hour.

Good discussion.

I leave mine on all the time because it takes tooooo long to boot up.

It's probably not all that good on it, but hey, my HDD has been saying failure imminent for over a year and nothing has come of it, so I guess it's not all that bad. But hey, leave that to me, if yer leaving it unattended, turn it off, unless of course it's just a brb. Lol, I'm too lazy to wait for bootup.

I leave my download/media PC on 24/7, the mobo died after about 2 years of use (basically non stop), but I'm not sure if that's related or not.

I leave mine on 24/7, I always power down my monitor when ever I'm not using it. I fold 24/7.

If I didn't fold I would shut it down. Seeing as I would only use the computer 2-8 hours of a day.

whenever you turn any electronic component on or off it stresses the component, because of the way electrons move through a circuit it causes stress and heat, not good for any electronic part. It's called thermal shock - liken it to putting an egg from the fridge straight into boiling water - it cracks.

Turning your electronic circuit can do the same, think about it... light bulbs always blow when you turn them on, never 2 or 3 hours in to them being on eh.

Now circuits these days are built and designed to a higher quality standard, engineers factor these points in and rate the performance.

Point I'm making here is the "life" of any component is designed in "life hours", engineers know when that part will probably fail by using statistics and its not going to be within the first couple of years of life, why do you thing they can give warranties of 3 years etc on some parts like a PSU maybe, because they know the statistical life of the part.

They send parts to test houses and estimate how many times you'll turn it on or off over 3 years, i.e. 356 X 4 times a day for 5 years and replicate that use in tests.

Point: Turn it off it aint gonna blow, they (you'll) know you'll probably upgrade or throw something away before it goes wrong because the stats say so, save the environment and save some cash. Swich it off!
