a few questions to help me understand more. did you plug a new monitor to you your computer or did you install a new video card?
Never mind on this miss read your post.

do you mean that your processor is at 100% if so hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and go to task manager and tell me what process is going at 100%.

You have Vista. Go to Performance Monitor and it will tell you exactly what the HD is doing.

A hard drive going bad will show 100 percent usage of its internal resources (mostly making it unavailable when the system appears to start to semifreeze when accessing bad sectors or otherwise). It causes extremely slow performance and eventually leads to an untimely and gruesome death. Most entertaining.

Occasionally, a severely screwed up file system can also cause near freezes while the HD is trying to access the proper information that has been corrupted or lost in said filesystem.

Don't get him to worried. I had hard drive problems when i first installed vista that are similar to what you are say but it was a sata driver problem with my chipset. It seemed like my hd was running all of the time and when i tried to open a game or something it would hang awhile and work or just bsod. I would check to see if vista has any updates for your chipset and if so download them to see if they fix the problem. Just to be safe you might want to backup your data first.

Thank you all for your posts-

yes, my HDD runs at 100% nonstop... like it doesnt run at 90 then 94 then 100 then back to 90, its 100% for a good 10 minutes just after booting... after boot has finished and i havent done anything... it will drop all the way down to zero and be happy. it will then run normally the rest of the time i am logged in, with a few spurts of 100%dom during the time that i am playing a game.

harddrive issue eh? damn...

randomly, i will hear clicking sounds coming from my pc. there are no moving parts in my PC and it couldnt be the fans because they just wouldnt make that sound. funny thing is, i replaced my HDD not too long ago and the sound is still there. it just doesnt sound like a fan though...

could it be that my motherboard is screwing up my HDD and causing it to missread or worse?

how do i get to this performance manager that is included in vista?

thank you all for your helP! rep +

Open Control Panel. There is something like "Performance Monitor" in there. It will let you monitor the read/write of your HDs by application.
