Water will always find a way to flow to the path that is least resistant. So even with turbulence the water will keep cycling throughout the block because the flow and pressure keeps water as a single volume and directed current. Yes turbulence will cause slightly lower temps and increase the rate at which the loops heat rises. The turbulence blocks are easier to produce and with only a slight difference in temps it's not a huge concern.

I've never seen a CPU waterblock disassembled, and I've been trying to understand it's structure from pictures online, particularly of the HK 3.0 model or the new Koolance block:


It appears to be the case that these blocks are composed in this way:

[top plate]
["spreading" plate (small plate with thin line)]
[bottom plate with channels]

...and they fit together with screws. Water goes in through the intake in the top plate, becomes dispersed via the spreading plate, flows through the channels of the bottom plate--and the bottom plate is the copper that directly touches the CPU die with the smooth finish--and up and out again through the top plate via an outtake. Is this correct? Could someone add some more detail to my design, if it's wrong? Where are the O-rings fitted? Are there any good CPU-waterblock-disassembled sites online? I haven't been able to find one!

Moonslug, your assessment is neatly summed up.

Some other notes:
  • The portion of the block that makes contact with the IHS of the CPU will generally have a pin-design on its interior that the liquid will flow over/around
  • Some blocks have an inlet and an outlet that are not reversible
  • There is an "O" ring that seals the 2 outer portions of the block
  • Some blocks (i.e. Fuzion) have different nozzles for different types of CPU's (dual, quad)
  • Some blocks have faces (contact footprint with the IHS) that are bowed (convex)
  • Every new block ought to be dismantled prior to being put in to service to ensure there is no post-production contaminants
  • A backplate is highly recommended
  • There are blocks that have dual outlets and a single inlet

Got new pic's of my latest efforts.

for the sake of our server I have provided a link to my work log on the P5N-D water block
It is in my sig.

(edit instead of double post)(leak testing my latest creation)

I was leak tested this block Sunday night by setting it up in a loop with out a rad.
I was concerned that this method would not develope suffiant presure to reveal any
leaks, much to my amazement after a couple hours of running the loop got hotter than my loop ever did when it was set up and cooling.

I guess this just proves that the people who say run your loop- pump, rad., cpu and not pump, CPU, rad. are right
