Do I need a clean install?/ Using XP Pro Upgrade Disc

Thread Starter
I'm building a new rig with new mobo, cpu, gpu, and mem. Right now I'm running Windows XP Home on a 40GB IDE hard drive but I have no clue where the box went with the CD Key, and I also have a Windows XP Pro Upgrade CD that I haven't used. Do I need a clean install of Windows if I were to use my old HDD with my new components? And if I do, is it possible to reformat and get a clean install with the upgrade disc?

i would do a clean install and to get your CD key off your computer google windows XP key viewer. it will view the key and you can write it down. i have done it many times to a computer i was working on.

You dont need to white it clean, unless the harddrive came out of a compaq or dell or something like that. I took a harddrive and put in my rig outta my compaq and had to reformat it for it to work. So as long as its a copy that wasnt on one of those, then you wont need to reformat, otherwise you will MOST likely. its always good to start fresh when starting with fresh hardware though
Meh.

I would do a clean install, You can get some weird issues if you have chipset drivers from 2 different mobos.

K, but I can't find the XP Home install disc. If I do find it somewhere though, will that CD key work for the new setup?

I think the one I have is OEM... not sure though. So is the XP Pro upgrade disc completely useless though?
