It just got released recently and I ordered off the razer website. Here's my review.
Product Specs from Razer site
Package Contents
- The Keyboard (no duh)
- Certificate of Authenticity (load of crap)
- Manual/Setup CD
- Marketing Kit (lol a small booklet of available Razer Products)
- Razer Stickers
The Keyboard
The look of the keyboard is simple. It has a generic key layout, you wont find anything new here. The keyboard has a chrome finish. It weights fairly light, but really solid. It has 4 rubber feet, which are VERY STICKY and sticks very well to any surface. The base also has 2 angled feet that flips out to provide angled typing (which also has those awesome rubber feet. It comes with a detachable wrist rest, which is a screw-on and makes keyboard really robust (non of that flimsy wrist rest crap that vibrates and shakes when you type). The wrist rest also has 2 rubber feet.
The Keys
The letters imprints on the keys are translucent. This means that they are barely viewable if the backlight is off. The keys have a very nice rubber finish. I can't tell you how much I love the rubber finish, it feels nice and smooth, just like my Deathadder mouse. The keys are quiet when typing, and the bounce back is pretty very strong. On the upper right corner of the keyboard is a small rectangle of touch keys. These are touch sensitive keys. It has the standard media keys, volume control and light control. The middle is big Razer logo, and enables the keyboard's "Gaming Mode" which disables the windows key (pretty much useless). Also the media keys ONLY works with 4 programs: WMP, Real Player, iTunes, and WinAmp. So if you use any other media players you're screwed. Oh ya this keyboard has 1000Hz polling rate so there is no lag (screw that, wired keyboards don't lag regardless of polling).
The Lights
The keyboard has 3 Light settings: 1. OFF 2. WASD 3. ON. This pretty much explains its self. WASD will only have WASD lit, and ON will have the whole keyboar d lit. The light is controlled by the touch key on the corner of the keyboard, or by software. There is a brightness difference between the WASD and ON. WASD is at least twice as bright as ON. But the brightness is not adujstable. I think its a USB power issue. I don't know.
The Software
Since its new, both drivers and firmware are still version 1. The software offers 10 on the fly profile switching. Each profile has the ability to be assigned to a certain program and apply the corresponding macro and pre-programed keys. Every single key on the keyboard is programmable, with the exception of the touch keys. Overall the software is simple and easy to use, but it does need more features.
The Extras
On the top edge of the keyboard there is a USB port, and audio jacks. The USB port offers 1000MHz automatic polling rate on anything (this is not usb overclocking), which is nice to use if you have a high end mouse like my Deathadder. The audio jacks are just one headphone jack and a microphone jack.
The Impression
The keyboard looks sexy, the WASD lighting is creative, the keys have a VERY nice finish, and the touch keys on the right corners makes this keyboard feel futuristic. But thats about it. The features are quite disappointing. The software is satisfactory, so NOT GREAT. I'd expect some more features like brightness adujstment, more media player intergration, perhaps programmable touch keys, or fading light like the deathadder. The so called "Game Mode" is bull crap, it just disables the windows key. In conclusion I am quiet disappointed.
Summary:
Pros:
- Nice backlight, WASD light
- Looks Sexy
- Touch keys
- Very fast response rate
- Offers automatic 1000HZ USB port for any device
- I love the rubber, the keys feels shmoooooth and they're non-slip. Also the rubber feets sticks very well
- Solid design
Cons
- Expensive $79.99USD
- Poor software
- Poor features
- Barely viewable letters when backlight is off
- Poor touch key intergration
- Useless "Game Mode"
- Keyboard layout is too generic
My Rating 7/10
This keyboard is mostly all looks, thats it. If you want features, go for G15. I was gonna buy that but personally I think the G15 butt ugly, even for the V2. I'd recommend this keyboard if you are a Razer fan, or likes generic nice looking things. The damn things feels great, but the price doesn't justify the features.
I thought this keyboard was gonna be awesome but I was wrong. I'd return this keyboard if it was from a local store, but it's too much trouble to ship it back. So I'll keep it. At least it's better than my old wireless keyboard, which lags like hell and disconnects very often (that's right, its a Logitech MX3000). And I do hope they release better software for it in the future.
Finally I attached some pics for y'all to enjoy, including a glimpse of my DeathAdder (awsome mouse 9/10).
