Need PSU for K8S-LA mobo...how many pins?

Thread Starter
A friend of mine wants to put a new vid card in his Compaq sr1550NX desktop. He bought a 2600xt which requires *two* power inputs which his PSU simply doesn't have. Furthermore, the 2600xt docs say you need a 300W or better PSU.

I want to recommend a good PSU to him at newegg but am not sure if it's 20 pin or 20+4 or 24 pin. I've been googling for K8S-LA specs but can't seem to find a sheet that just describes the power requirements.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sneaky, the K8S-LA is a proprietary motherboard from HP/Compaq. Hopefully an aftermarket PSU will be compatible with this motherboard. The K8S-LA is a 20-pin configuration. Specifications of this motherboard and pictures can be found here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...00257657&lc=en

Most if not all PSU's that came out after EPS12V have an additional 4-pin power connector that is compatible with a 24-pin motherboard. (don't quote me on that but I am pretty sure)

The reason I ask if it's going to be compatible or not is because some of the older proprietary motherboards were specifically designed around power supplies provided by compaq. Make sure you get a power supply that is powerful enough and has at least 34 amps on the 12volt rail. The PSU that I run in my sig is a little overkill but it's great

Good luck
