Help with Netgear router + Steam

Thread Starter
I've been having a problem joining servers on all Steam based games and getting server lists to load. I'm pretty sure my router is causing the problem because when I plug the machine directly into the modem it works fine.

I have a WRGv614 or whatever. I tried doing TCP and UDP but I couldn't get it to work. I was wondering if there were any smart network people on OCN that think the ycan walk me through getting my router to not interfere with Steam.

I can eventually connect to servers if I continue to double click on them etc but that's just a pain and by the time I connect the server is full! Argh

I would love to rep anyone who can try and help me get this thing to work! I'll even let you call me, if you're not a stalker! lol

portforward?
Try it with your firewall off.
Update to latest steam.

Sorry but there basic answers, try them first.

As sin stated, port forewording will probably be best\\easiest. If you look on the support page for steam you should be able to find which port the steam applet uses and tell your firewall not to block\\filter this port and just foreward straight to your PC.

Do you run a PC firewall as well as one on your router? If so you also want to check it's settings to make sure it's leaving steam alone. There's also a slight change they're interferring with one another. Try disabling your firewall while using the router to see if this helps.

My personal advsie would be to check and see if your router is compatiable to be flashed to DD-WRT. One of the best protocols to run a router on and it's far easier to configure that most of the built in router configs from my experience.

If no one here can get you fixed i'd be willing to jump on AIM and try to help you out. PM me your AIM info.

I use the rp614v3 router made by netgear and had the same problems as you. I fixed it by using a static ip from the address reservation and portforwarding the ports that I use because the router always closes certain ports. No clue why it does that but maybe it'll work for you also.

For a start try enabling your router to allow all outgoing connections.
