****Aspire 5520 - DVD Drive Missing?**** HELP!!!! plz plz plz pretty please!

Ok

GF has acer Aspire 5520,

Nice laptop, awesome rig, horrid dvd player, play's the "missing in action" scene waaaay to often for any good.

- Normal mode
not detected, no cd drive, etc...

- Safe mode, Hey it can play cd's! Find stuff,

- Bios, enabled found

- Normal Mode - Admin Tools = Comp Management = Only HD detected...

Trying to "not" do a full restore.

I can backup all her data, pic's, etc. Everything, that's easy, Since purchase of over 2 months ago, it's happened now twice where the dvd drive randomly disapears.

Tried holding the "xp" shift key to stop the drive from accessing when placing a cd or dvd or similar in the drive (chose not to put balogna in there).

No luck on that idea.

Checked device manager, nothing there at all either...

But, it is detected in bios, and safe mode, but not normal, ***...

Any suggestions anyone???


I'm getting the laptop from GF tomorrow night to try and work on, Any and all THOROUGH suggestions hiiiiiiighly appreciated. Would rather "not" have to rebuild it for her, or similar...

ACer support online sux fyi, and checked for driver updates, nothing on cd-rom drive period, everything is for mobo, bios, video, sound, cam, memory reader, etc, all but cd-rom...

Suggestions? plz?

I have managed to fix this problem on my 5520-5716 after much aggrevation. What worked for me was to download and install the video driver from the Acer website; device manager should show 7.15.11.138 for the video adapter driver version. No need to manually uninstall the existing driver, the one from the Acer website will do that for you.

What caused this problem to occur? In my case, allowing Windows Update to install the newer driver it recommends.

I just wanted to confirm that drivers coming from Windows Update are responsible for DVD drive not showing in My Computer on Acer Aspire 5520.
In BIOS DVD drive was present but in Windows it was missing. I suspect the VGA driver and nVidia network controller driver are to blame.
Do not disassemble the computer as I did, just install the official Acer drivers.

Have you tried restoring the computer to an earlier time. Go to start. Go to control panel. Go to system and security, Select restore your computer to an earlier time. Select open system restore. Hit next and try going to last months restore or the beginning. Maybe the automatic updates that the laptop does messed up the drivers.

Let me know if that worked.
