About to do my 8800GT volt mod

Ok, here's what I was thinking, just tell me if this is a good idea or not.

What i'm planning to do is just put the solder onto the wire that I want to put on the graphics card, then put the wire on the spot that it needed to be soldered to and let it harden. Is that a good idea? I know that it won't make a difference when it comes to electrical conductivity, but still.

Thats the idea. Pre solder the wire, then apply a small amount of flux to the board. Then hold the wire on the conponent pad and apply heat until the solder flows and your good to go. Hold the wire as still as possible until the solder sets, your looking for it to be nice and bright when your done. If it has a dull look, then your have a "cold joint". Just reflux it, apply more heat and let the solder flow again. Good luck

Ok, I did the volt mod, except I did it without flux, and it still worked fine. Thanks for the help.

Great!, Flux isn't required, it just helps the solder flow better and thus the amount of time heat needs to be applied.

So what happens if you do have cold joints?

It will have a poor mechanical bond and sometimes higher resistance. Sometimes cold joints cause intermittant problems that are hard to trace if you don't know you have a cold joint.
Really the best way to repair a joint is to use solder wick or a solder sucker and completely remove the old solder. Then start over.
You definately don't want a cold joint on a volt mod.
