EVGA 780i Overclocking Guide - Page 20

I was having problems with dying threads in Prime95 25.6.6 until I did the vdroop pencil mod, even with the vcore showing plenty high in various monitoring tools in windows. I had it set at 1.4375 when I did the pencil mod and after booting and running Prime95 for a while it showed a high of 1.45v in CPU-Z and a pretty steady 1.44. Prime95 didn't drop any threads, but when I checked the core temps and core0 was up over 70c! WHOOPS! I hadn't seen anything over 63c previous to that, it really crept up and scared the buhjeezus out of me when I saw it! I have had my Q6700 up to 75c in my notebook with no problems, but I still don't know how robust these Yorkies are and I would rather not find out by losing $1k. I backed the vcore down to 1.425 and CPU FSB back from 1.4 to 1.3 in the bios and this run CPU-Z is bouncing between 1.416 and 1.424 with Prime95 churning away and core0 has crept up to 66c. I'll see how much further I can back down the voltage without killing off threads. I backed it down to 1.4125 on the vcore and temps are down 3c more now and Prime95 hasn't had any threads screw the pooch yet. Hopefully I can go lower. It really seems like the pencil mod increases the current in addition to the voltage, it's much more stable. It's far too easy not to do!

I've had the system built for about a week now, but I had a couple of false starts. I tried an Ultra ChillTec pelt setup for kicks, but what a POS that was. Not only was it a nightmare to get it to sit square on the cpu, but that 50w pelt is just too wimpy to pump up the volume. On top of that, the OCZ 850w PS I had in it also appears to be a POS. I couldn't overclock it at all with it and it wouldn't even run both 8800's at stock clocks. When fed the 8800's with an XFinity 500w I could start to overclock some, but my vcore and 12v levels sucked. After replacing the crappy TEC with the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme and installing the Cooler Master 1250w PS, it was like it was a totally different box.

I've been so busy with work that I haven't had a lot of time to work on this box yet. I suspect the CPU block can use a lapping and I want to replace the chipset fan with one of the 60mm P3 fans I have kicking around. I also need to hack up some deep fin ram heatsinks I have and pepper them around where they can do some good. I really think I ought to be able to get 4500 stable out of this thing with some work. I'm also kicking around the idea of building fan shrouds for both sides of the Ultra-120X to control the airflow a little better. Once I push air to the limit it'll be time for some water!

Ok 0602 bios now and I have tryed both the 169.25 and 169.28 beta drivers to no avail for 3way sli even tho its enabled in nvidia control panel. Anyone using 3 vid cards and vista or have a hack vid card driver to run 3way sli in xp?

I am pretty sure that when you do a pencil mod, you don't want the voltage in windows to be higher than that of the Bios. It should be as close to the Bios vcore as possible, but never above. Maybe you can take some pics, because I am desperate enough to do it already, yeah void warranty!!!!!

Yea I tryed that initially last night, I loaded XP onto the machine with newest Nvidia drivers and had no SLI option but found out 3way sli is for Vista only....so loaded Vista instead .......what a bummer

It's virtually right on the money now, it is set at 1.375 and it varies by less than 1/100th of a volt at idle or load now.

There's a good pic of the mod from dinos22 on xtremesystems at http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/2...1212121il9.png and another from T_M (same forum) at http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3.../vmodseVGA.jpg

Those are 680i's, but the chips look the same on the 780i and are in the same place, just above and to the left of the leftmost DDR slot. It's ridiculously simple and takes all of about 5 seconds to do on an installed mobo if you can see and get at the surface mount resistor with a #2 pencil.

EDIT: I was wondering why those pictures involved 3 different resistors but I figure it out, two different ways to voltmod.

Well I just did the single resistor, not too shabby, finally got stable at 1600 FSB and 3.6 Ghz, which is what I got my 19k 3dmark06 on. But its too hot in prime to run 24/7, lets just say well above 70C.

Don't know what happened to the vcard. Yes, have tried swapping them, etc., etc.
BFG has lifetime warranty so I'll RMA.
