http://www.overclock.net/intel-mothe...evga-780i.html

Since then I have updated to the P04 BIOS, but I haven't changed anything else, so my problem still stands. I've taken some photos of the relevant BIOS screens (see attached). Apologies for the focus on a couple of them, I had to taken them in a bit of a hurry.

@Danylu: you can fit a normal fan connector to the CPU fan header on the 780i, you just use the left 3 pins.

*edit* it was mentioned in my previous thread that I should only use 2GB of RAM, contrary to my sig that's all I have at the moment, the other 2GB will be delivered tomorrow.
@analbeard O... Ok Cool thanks, I'm probably not going to be able to fit my hands under a scythe infinity anyway.

Ok I've read mixed opinions on the net but @ 3.4Ghz is a higher multipler or a higher FSB better? What are the cons and pros of each? Cheers. (I've think I've already written this but I'm staying at 3.4Ghz because going up to 3.6Ghz brings my cpu to 80C whilst 3.4Ghz is only 65-70C

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/24...cythe-infinity
"I just put my new system together today.trying to overclock the G0 Q6600.333FSB went fine.but when try to increase to 3.4Ghz@1.35v try start run OCCT the PC restart itself.try lower to 3.33ghz with 1.3650v idle at 34C.but when start OCCT again shutdown instantly.I specially bought this Scythe Infinity(Mugen) to overlock this quad core. But just keep failing.why?VTT+0.2 NB+0.2-0.3V.Ram run in safe margain <800mhz 5-5-5-18 @2V"

Looks like I'm not the only one having problems with the Infinity...

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/200...2_quad_q6600/3

Read it and their max stable OC q6600 on XFX 680i + scythe infinity is 3.2Ghz...

They both lead me to believe.... DONT GET THE SCYTHE INFINITY FOR OVERCLOCKING, its good for a quiet PC config. I reckon the Thermalright Ultra-120 is alot better and I've sort of learnt that the hard way... Looks like I won't be hitting 30fps 1600x1200 in Crysis then.

Got a bit of an update; things seem to be stable now, all I've done is change is the memory timings. Running at 2.8GHz (350x8) and 4-4-4-13

Lookg at your pics from left to right.

1st, most people recommend turning all the spectrums off for stability

2nd, I prefer to unlink the memory and fsb so i dont have to worry about changing everything around, that way you can get one set of steppings stable and not have to worry about them when other settings cause instability.

3rd, no comment

4th, use at .east +.05 V in each gtl reference, for some reason they help with stability, I have mine at +.15, but thats just what my mobo likes. Also, I cant see what your vdroop is since it looked like you took pics right when you were changing voltages, but for your vcore, what do you get for setting, and actual.

Also, I didnt mean to say never to use 4 gigs of ram, I meant to say only to use 2 gigs while getting everything stable, plus some people have to put 2 in, set the memory settings and then install the other 2.

Ok 3.4Ghz is unstable for me but I've got one question, in Prime95 it tells me rounding error... please consult stress.txt for more information. I can't find that file, can someone help. (tomorrow I stress test at 3.2Ghz, I usually do it when I'm away from home)

I've also got another problem. Nvidia monitor tells me my CPU is @ 220C the other strange thing is that under individual core temperatures Everest reports them as being 75-80C. I just want to know whether this is an isolated problem, last time this happened I thought it was a software problem so I restarted and it was ok again.

edit: Nvidia Monitor tells me its 245C, it blinks off (the same way it does when it cannot detect a temp) then comes back. I have no idea what is wrong, any suggestions?

My MCP (southbridge or northbridge) according to Everest tells me that it is @ 76C whilst I am word processing (CPU 3.2Ghz), does that affect stability in any way? I have strapped a 60mm fan onto it and I'm gonna look around for an 80mm to see if I find one, if I dont is there an alternative that I can do without pulling out the wallet? I'm a student and cash is tight. Cheers

Thanks people this is a good website with very helpful people on it.

Man I cannot get my Q6600 past 3.2 - I have 4 gigs of memory installed (type in sig below). I read that might be what is causing my problems. I'm stable at 8x400 but I cannot flip that multiplier to 9 without BSOD on boot. I had it stable at 8x425 for a few hours (and three runs of 3DMark06) but it BSOD me about 20 minutes into Crysis. My cooling is totally under control with idles around 28c-30c and peaks into the 50's top.

Right now I have memory sitting at stock (5-5-5-15) at 2.3V. I only got to 3.4 when I did not sync the timings up and left the memory at 800. Which once again irked me as it's 1066 and shoudl not be giving me issues (but I'll admit while my knowledge is increasing quickly I'm a goob on memory timings).

well it seems that nvidia boards dont like 4x1 memory, they prefer 2x2.

Make sure you have the lastest version of the monitoring programs, that could cause problems. the MCP around 70 though just means your cooler needs to be reseated.

Just a last comment on my OC. I'm leaving the processor at 3.2Ghz. It shall go no higher as it then becomes too hot and unstable. I think that 3.2Ghz can be achieved by just about any cooler and 3.6Ghz is reserved for the well cooled systems.

Cheers for your answer Joe, what speed to you recommend setting the memory at if I'm unlinking it?

On another point, I installed Speedfan earlier and noticed it read my temps a bit differently (see attached png). Which would you say is more reliable? Speedfan or CoreTemp?

My names not Joe but anyway I'm not sure whether I should use Speedfan and CoreTemp, some people say they can be up to 15C wrong but I wouldn't know because personally I use Everest and Nvidia MonitorView and both display the same temps and I assume Nvidia as a massive company can make their own software well.

Another question though, in your sig under graphics card do u have the 8800GTS or the 7600GT? I assume you can't have both in at the same time.

Ah ok, cheers Danylu, I'll give that a try. Had a bad experience with Nvidia software before (nTune used to lock up my system with my old mobo) so I didn't even consider it. I was replying to Joe's analysis of my BIOS screens btw.

I do have both those graphics cards in my machine, the 8800 drives my two monitors and the 7600 drives my HDTV.

http://images.simonweald.com/pc.JPG <you can see them both there (old setup).
